Military Manpower Administration introduces electronic attendance system following Song Min Ho controversy.
The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) has announced plans to implement an electronic attendance system to ensure stricter monitoring of public service workers’ attendance. The move appears to be in response to allegations of negligence during singer Song Min Ho’s substitute service.
On January 21st KST, the MMA unveiled its major policy initiatives for 2025, which include measures aimed at preventing similar cases. Among these is the introduction of an electronic check-in and check-out procedure for public service workers, replacing the current manual system that is reportedly prone to falsification.
Song Min Ho served as a public service worker at the Mapo Facilities Management Corporation and Mapo Residents’ Convenience Facilities from March 2023 until December 23rd. Allegations surfaced that he frequently failed to adhere to work hours, neglected his duties, and excessively utilized leave, raising concerns about the oversight of public service workers.
In addition to stricter attendance monitoring, the MMA plans to:
• Assign public service workers to agencies that align with their educational background and career interests.
• Provide tailored tasks that better suit individual skill sets.
• Expand self-development programs focused on employment and entrepreneurship.
• Prioritize placements in advanced strategic industries with incentives for designated organizations.
The Song Min Ho controversy has brought attention to the need for systemic improvements, highlighting flaws in the current system that the MMA aims to address.
