CJ CheilJedang's 'Bibigo' dumplings have been granted a patent for dumplings that do not burst during the production process.
According to CJ CheilJedang on April 17 KST, a patent has been approved in the United States for 'Bibigo' dumplings which feature two thin lines repeating across the outer skin. The patent, filed in February of 2023, has been approved as of April of 2025 and will remain valid for 15 years.
When the news of the patent sparked anger among some Chinese netizens, accusing South Korea of "stealing dumplings, a traditional Chinese food," CJ CheilJedang clarified, "The patent is for an outer skin design invented by CJ CheilJedang to prevent the dumplings from bursting during mass production. It is not a patent on all types of dumplings."
Meanwhile, 'Bibigo' is the best-selling dumpling product in the United States, dominating the market share at 37.5% in 2023 and 41% in 2024.
