Although he was absent from promotions, former Big Bang member T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun) couldn’t resist sharing his excitement about 'Squid Game 2.' On the 25th, T.O.P posted several photos on Instagram with the caption, “D-1 #SquidGame2.”
The photos showcased Netflix gifts he received as a cast member of 'Squid Game 2,' featuring various collaboration items related to the series. The gifts highlighted the intense global interest and popularity surrounding the highly anticipated sequel.
Despite this gesture, T.O.P has been entirely excluded from 'Squid Game 2' promotions. In July 2017, he was sentenced to 10 months in prison with a two-year probation period for marijuana use. Public backlash against T.O.P remains strong, stated he had no intention of returning to the group. T.O.P has avoided all official events and interviews linked to the drama’s release.
At a press conference in August, 'Squid Game 2' writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed the controversy surrounding T.O.P’s casting. He admitted, “I didn’t anticipate this level of controversy. The incident happened a long time ago, and the sentence and probation have long been served. While there are celebrities who have returned to work after similar incidents, I underestimated the public’s reaction. Looking back, I realize I may have been short-sighted.”
Nevertheless, Director Hwang defended his decision, stating, “We conducted thorough verification, and Choi Seung-hyun showed immense determination. I personally reviewed his audition tape and even observed his efforts during the script reading. He demonstrated both talent and dedication.”
The director elaborated on his reasoning: “The role in Season 2 required courage, and I believed Choi Seung-hyun was the most suitable actor. While the decision sparked controversy, I worked closely with him throughout the process and felt confident in my choice. I hope viewers will reserve judgment until they see the results. It wasn’t an easy decision for either of us." Director Hwang concluded, “I understand why some people might not agree, but I had my reasons. I hope viewers will reconsider their opinions after watching the project.” With the release of 'Squid Game 2,' much attention is focused on whether public opinion toward T.O.P will shift or if the backlash will intensify.
Meanwhile, 'Squid Game 2' picks up where Season 1 left off, centering on Ki-hoon (Lee Jung-jae), who forgoes his trip to the United States to pursue his own mission. Returning cast members include Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, and Gong Yoo, alongside new additions such as Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, and Choi Seung-hyun (T.O.P). The series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on the 26th.
