The controversy surrounding singer Lim Young Woong and a direct message (DM) exchange continues to escalate, with even rumors of his removal as a public relations ambassador emerging.
On December 9th, a representative from Pocheon City Hall addressed the rumors, stating, “We have neither discussed nor reviewed the possibility of terminating Lim Young Woong’s role as an ambassador.” The official clarified that no discussions related to his removal have taken place since the controversy began.
However, the representative added, “The facts of the matter have not yet been confirmed. After verification, there is a possibility that it could be reviewed.” This suggests that the individual in the controversial DM exchange may not be Lim Young Woong, and the authenticity of the messages remains unverified.
The controversy began on December 7th when a DM conversation allegedly involving Lim Young Woong was shared online. Amid a politically charged atmosphere in South Korea, Lim had posted a celebratory message for his pet dog’s birthday on his social media. A netizen responded with the message: “What are you doing in these times?”
To this, the alleged reply from Lim was a curt, “What?” prompting the netizen to elaborate: “The entire nation is gathering over the impeachment motion against a president who issued an unconstitutional martial law. I don’t expect you to speak out, but your indifference is astonishing. Isn’t your main fanbase people of the age group who experienced martial law before?” The response attributed to Lim read, “Am I a politician? Why should I speak out?”
The exchange sparked heated debate online. Columnist Hwang Gyo Ik remarked, “Choosing not to make political statements is a personal freedom. However, claiming that only politicians can raise political voices might insult citizens who brave the cold to express their political opinions in public spaces. It could come across as saying, ‘You’re not politicians, so why are you doing this?’”
While many netizens aligned with Hwang’s view, others defended Lim, emphasizing his right to individual freedom.
As the controversy persists, Lim Young Woong and his agency have remained silent. Speculation has also emerged questioning the authenticity of the DM exchange, suggesting it could have been fabricated. Pocheon City Hall has taken a cautious stance in light of these developments, refraining from making any hasty decisions regarding Lim’s ambassador role.
As the issue enters its third day, all eyes are on Lim Young Woong and his agency to see if they will eventually address the matter.
