Korean streamers, who traveled to Brazil to attend the annual 'Rio Carnival,' known as one of the world's top three festivals, faced an issue during a live stream.
On February 13, AfreecaTV streamers Park Soo Bak and Haengbae held a live stream to share scenes fromthe Rio Carnival with their viewers.
The two streamers decided to take a break in front of a vendor's stand and set their smartphone down in front for a brief moment.
That's when it happened. Pickpockets nearby stole the female streamer Park Soo Bak's phone.
However, the thieves were unaware that the smartphone was still live-streaming in real-time. The thieves tried to turn off the broadcast but were unable to find the proper buttons and inadvertently exposed their faces to viewers.
Fans quickly created clips from the moment and helped the streamers to capture the faces.
However, it seems the culprits have yet to be apprehended. Haengbae explained in a subsequent broadcast, "We went to three nearby police stations to show the faces of the criminals, but they told us that Rio is too vast, and with the ongoing festival, it's hard to find them."
Some internet users criticized Park Soo Bak and her companions for their 'lack of safety awareness' regarding this incident.
Previously, Park Soo Bak drew criticism back in 2022 when she and another female streamer traveled to India and danced in front of local men. Moreover, there have been various incidents abroad, such as a male YouTuber being assaulted while traveling to Africa, prompting reminders to be more cautious when traveling overseas.
It's kind of funny they went to three different police stations trying to get the phone back. It's one of the most dangerous cities on earth at their busiest tourist season -- they couldn't care less about your phone.
