Will Disney+'s new Original Series 'Vigilante' succeed following 'Moving'?
On November 6, Disney+ unveiled its new original series, 'Vigilante,' during a production presentation held at the Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The event was graced by acclaimed Korean actors Yoo Ji Tae, Lee Joon Hyuk, and Kim So Jin, along with the show's director, Choi Jeong Yeol. However, the lead actor, Nam Joo Hyuk, who enlisted in the military in March, was absent due to his current service obligations.
'Vigilante' is an action-packed thriller that tells the gripping narrative of Kim Ji Yong. By day, Kim Ji Yong is a model police academy student; by night, he transforms into a 'Vigilante,' dishing out his brand of justice on criminals who manage to evade the law. His story is interwoven with people encompassing various motives, which furthers the series' intrigue. The gritty show is based on the critically acclaimed Naver webtoon by prolific writer Kim Gyu Sam.
Director Choi Jeong Yeol describes 'Vigilante' as a work that captures where "charismatic characters with divergent beliefs and aims collide and intertwine," thereby enhancing anticipation for the narrative complexities the show promises.
When quizzed about the primary focus when adapting the webtoon into a series, Director Choi elaborated, "Our focus was on leveraging the strengths of a series to craft an audacious and stylish ending. Given webtoons' typically elaborate narratives, we made a conscientious effort to retain a swift pace and heightened tension throughout."
Speaking of actor Nam Joo Hyuk's portrayal of Kim Ji Yong, the director opined, "He is a perplexing and multifaceted character. I felt that Nam Joo Hyuk's portrayal, which combines his vibrancy and youthful representation with an unseen blend of anger, vindictiveness, and astute expressions, would be compelling. The character 'Kim Ji Yong' in the webtoon possesses its charm, but I believe Nam Joo Hyuk's on-screen 'Kim Ji Yong' is an equally captivating persona."
Yoo Ji Tae assumes the challenging role of Jo Heon, the leader of a special investigation team hot on 'Vigilante's' trail. He shared insights into his character preparation, revealing, "I deem it essential to embody the character's persona right down to the appearance. In order to lend an intimidating physical presence to the character, I gained around 20kg and underwent a novel experience while building muscle mass."
Recalling his impression of Yoo Ji Tae's transformation, Director Choi said, "When Yoo Ji Tae showed up for a meeting, it was as if 'Jo Heon' had walked in. His mannerisms, hair, and attire were flawlessly in character."
Lee Joon Hyuk, who interprets the character of Jo Kang Ok, a follower and second-generation chaebol of 'Vigilante,' discussed his approach to embodying his character and how he was inspired by various documentaries and reality television shows. Kim So Jin, playing the on-screen journalist Choi Mi Rye, also spoke on how she prepared her character with the director's vision in mind.
Additionally, the cast and crew highlighted certain aspects of the series that viewers should look out for. Yoo Ji Tae confidently stated, "It's high time for a Korean-style action hero story to hit the screens. I am confident that 'Vigilante' can fill that role. We look forward to your enthusiastic engagement."
Disney+ original series 'Vigilante' premiered on November 8 and has already captured the attention of viewers globally. It is now available for subscription on Disney+. With its captivating narrative, engaging characters, and high-octane action sequences, the show promises to weave a thrilling ride, offering viewers an exhilarating escape into the world of 'Vigilante.'"
