A woman in her 30s, who attempted suicide after killing her 8-year-old son with disabilities, has been apprehended by the police.
Seoul Western Police Station announced on November 22 that they have arrested a woman in her 30s on charges of murder and are currently investigating the case.
The woman is accused of killing her 8-year-old son, who has a severe disability, by lighting a charcoal briquette to create carbon monoxide in their residence in Nokbeon-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, around 11 AM two days ago on November 20.
The two were found by a disability care worker when they visited their home. The mother regained consciousness, but the son was found dead at the scene. The mother was discharged after receiving treatment at a hospital.
During the police investigation, the woman stated, "I committed the crime due to despair over raising a disabled child alone." It has been confirmed that the woman raised her son alone after her divorce and received basic livelihood support and disability support services.
Although the police applied for a detention warrant for the mother, the Seoul Western District Court rejected it this afternoon, citing the reason that "the suspect appears to be in need of mental stability due to regret and attempted suicide."

It can be hard raising a child with special needs under the best circumstances. This poor woman must have really been desperate to do what she did. Truly tragic.
