Director Choi Dong Hoon, at the helm of 'Alienoid,' shared his insights and experiences while gearing up for the sequel.
The 'Alienoid 2' production briefing took place on November 22 at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul. The event featured not only Director Choi but also stars Ryu Jun Yeol, Kim Tae Ri, Kim Woo Bin, Yeom Jung Ah, Jo Woo Jin, Kim Ui Sung, and Jin Sun Gyu. They delved into a variety of anecdotes and insights about the film.
This sequel continues the narrative from 'Alienoid 1,' interweaving tales of humans and martial artists who time travel to the present to unveil hidden truths amidst intense competition for a divine weapon. The first film, released in July the previous year, met with mixed audience reviews.
When asked how the reception of the first film influenced the editing of its sequel, Director Choi expressed his excitement for the upcoming release, a year and a half after the first. He mentioned spending extensive time in the editing room, intensely focused on the actors' performances. Director Choi Dong Hoon said, "I'm excited to release it a year and a half after the previous work. During this time, I continued the latter part of the production. I lived in the editing room just looking at the actors' eyes," and added, "During the latter part of the work, I rediscovered what filmmaking is."
He elaborated on the uniqueness of 'Alienoid' as a series, noting the individuality and interconnectedness of each film. He explained, "It seems like 'Alienoid' needs a second part to meet as a good pair. It is a series, but each film has its own life. There was a dilemma about whether it feels like a series when combined or if it feels independent. I worried about whether audiences who haven't seen the first part would hesitate to watch the second part, but I took time to give an independent film feeling."
Choi acknowledged the challenge of making the sequel accessible to new viewers while maintaining its standalone appeal, emphasizing the importance of conveying the actors' passion and charisma to the audience.
The director emphasized, "The experience of working together and suffering together during the latter part of the production was important. It was also crucial to figure out how to convey to the audience the joy and charm that the actors showed during the long shooting period," and added, "I feel like I've watched about 150 films to make this film. Through this process, I truly came to love the actors."
Anticipation is building for 'Alienoid 2,' set to premiere in January next year, following its predecessor's intriguing setup.
