On July 6, a Facebook post caught attention, highlighting the remarkable journey of Kim Gyu Sang, the CEO of NV Entertainment and the mastermind behind the girl group Woo!ah!.
The post was titled, "The agency CEO who built a girl group from the ground up with his hard-earned wealth amassed over 25 years." The article featured an insightful interview with Kim Gyu Sang, who had previously appeared on YouTube's 'Gura-Cheol' show.
Before becoming a successful CEO, Kim Gyu Sang made a name for himself as a talented dancer and choreographer. He had choreographed for renowned artists such as Lee Hyori, Rain, SISTAR, HyunA, 4minute, Apink, and Brave Girls. With his extensive experience, he ventured into uncharted territory as the first choreographer to establish a girl group.
Reflecting on his journey, CEO Kim Gyu Sang humbly shared, "During my time as a choreographer, I earned approximately 300 million KRW (~229,148 USD) annually. However, when I decided to create Woo!ah! with the funds I had accumulated and my entire life savings, I ended up losing everything. Nowadays, I even take the subway."
Under CEO Kim Gyu Sang's guidance, Woo!ah! debuted on May 13, 2020, with a six-member lineup consisting of Nana, Wooyeon, Sora, Lucy, Minseo, and Songyee. Unfortunately, Songyee had to leave the group three months after their debut due to personal reasons, leaving the group with five members.
During the interview, CEO Kim Gyu Sang explained to Kim Gu Ra, "The concept of 'woo!ah!' revolves around their exceptional dance abilities." He further revealed the recruitment process, stating, "I discovered Nana through a dance competition. Wooyeon was initially a trainee from SM Entertainment, and I convinced her to join after ten months of persuasion. Lucy, a former JYP trainee, required me to persuade her parents. Lucy then introduced her friend Minseo to the group. Lastly, we have Sora, a Japanese member from Fukuoka, who joined thanks to her Korean mother's support."
Since their debut, Woo!ah! has released four single albums and one mini album, captivating fans with their music. Notably, Nana, the group's leader, has become a fixed MC alongside Billlie members Sua and Tsuki on MBC M's music program, 'Show Champion.'.
Furthermore, Nana and Wooyeon are currently participating in the Mnet survival show 'Queendom Puzzle,' hosted by Taeyeon since last month. 'Queendom Puzzle' aims to create a new project girl group through a contest featuring members from existing girl groups.
I recently got into woo!ah!, and they're discography is really good! I liked their songs so much I recommended them to my non-K-pop stan friend, and she even liked them! She's also rooting for Wooyeon on ''Queendom Puzzle'' now, too! Speaking of ''Queendom Puzzle'', I really hope Nana or Wooyeon place in the final top 7. Either way, I think the show will bring more attention to this amazing group!
