Jellyfish Entertainment's seven-piece boy band, VERIVERY - consisting of talented individuals, namely DONGHEON, HOYOUNG, MINCHAN, GYEHYEON, YEONHO, YONGSEUNG, and KANGMIN - recently made their awaited return with their seventh mini-album 'Liminality - EP.DREAM,' featuring the pop song "Crazy Like That" which serves as the title track.
After searching for one of the "elements of happiness," love, in their previous release, 'Liminality - EP.LOVE,' the boys venture further, now seeking to chase their profound dreams, turning them into reality in 'Liminality - EP.DREAM.'
To commemorate the release of their new album, the boys of VERIVERY sat down with the members of the press for a roundtable interview, and allkpop had the opportunity to ask the band a few questions.
During the interview, YEONHO discussed the differences between the preparation process for 'Liminality - EP.LOVE' and their recent album release, 'Liminality - EP.DREAM.' According to him, although the process for creating both albums was similar, the previous album had a much brighter and happier feel, which the group practiced conveying to their fans. While their latest album has both bright and darker elements that they worked hard to express fully. "I also think that we talked more as we prepared for this album compared to the last album preparation."
"We have tried our best to show our colors in all of the songs, and as a member, I know all the efforts that we have put into this group. I'm just proud of VERIVERY," HOYOUNG added.
In this record, VERIVERY demonstrates their approaches to reaching their dreams in two distinct expressions: 'PLAY' and 'PLAN.' 'PLAY' is the feeling of happiness of living at the moment, with the members being very energetic in a disordered space. While 'PLAN' unveils more of their sophisticated and sexy side, showcasing their plans for the future.
When asked about how they will identify themselves with these themes, the members shared their insights. YEONHO declares himself as a player, saying, "I'm spontaneous and I don't plan things. I tend to improvise when the time comes." KANGMIN, on the other hand, embraces the role of a planner. HOYOUNG aligns with the same identity as well. Meanwhile, DONGHEON and GYEHYEON said they are more of a player. On the other hand, YONGSEUNG replied, "Planning is a play for me, so it's difficult to choose."
Within this record, VERIVERY unveils five brand-new songs that ignite the passionate pursuit of dreams. "Crazy Like That" is the title song. and it depicts the fervor to achieve one's aspirations. According to YONGSEUNG, the title song is something that they have never tried before. "Though the new title song may sound like our debut song, I think they are quite different. We really focused on interpreting the song which is not too bright nor too dark into our performances. We are really affectionate towards this title track and we really hope that others catch that as well."
According to YONGSEUNG, he thinks that DONGHEON's part after the first verse is the highlight of the song, "I really like how he sings like he is whispering. I'm sad that he does it only once in the song."
In addition to the upbeat title track, 'Liminality - EP.DREAM' boasts an array of catchy songs. "JUICY JUICY" is a hip-hop and R&B track that evokes fluttering sensations in your heart. "Raincoat" is a track about mutual support during times of hardship, while the medium-tempo ballad tune, "Smile With You ( )," tugs at heartstrings with its feel-good melodies. Lastly, the hidden track, "Thank you, NEXT?", offers the conclusion exclusively for CD listeners.
DONGHEON on the meaning behind the parentheses in "Smile With You ( )": "The song was written for their fans who will be waiting for them in between the band's comebacks. The parentheses in the title represent blank, or the hiatus between our comebacks. We wanted to emphasize that."
"This was something that we have never tried before, so we are certain that our fans will like the song. We have always put on very big, grand performances, so I think performing this track would be something different," said member GYEHYEON on "Thank you, NEXT?".
"All of us put in our best efforts," YEONHO shared. "We put a lot of thought into music as we prepared for this comeback. There were some different opinions among us as well as the company when we were choosing the tracks for the album, but we managed to come to a consensus after discussing it among us. We agreed that our title track is an easy-listening song, but it was more difficult to actually sing than we expected. So we had to consult each other on this to figure things out and the recording process actually took longer compared to other albums."
This album stands as a testament to the members' steadfast dedication to reaching their dreams. It is the K-Pop industry that they are currently part of that they want to keep running towards. "We are currently putting our utmost effort into sharing our music and communicating with K-pop fans and music enthusiasts around the globe in order to achieve our dream in this K-pop industry."
"When I first heard that the name of the album was going to be 'Dream,' I thought of the members and the fans," said DONGHEON, adding that these people are the closest beings to his dream. "In this process of working to achieve our dreams in the K-pop industry, I can never leave out the members and the fans." He added, "So the songs are like my journal entries, like writing letters to my fans and the members."
Spending four years as VERIVERY in the scene, the members evolved from being colleagues and friends to a tightly-knit family. "I think the secret behind our teamwork is the leadership of our leader and the rest of us following him. Another thing is that we try to talk a lot amongst ourselves," said YEONHO. "Recently, we promised to not look at our phones while we eat together. I believe such moments really improved our teamwork a lot." DONGHEON chimed in, saying, "But KANGMIN always uses his cellphone. Rule breaker."
When discussing admired K-Pop idols, YONGSEUNG expresses respect for BIGBANG's TAEYANG, saying that he's such a great dancer and he learned a lot from him.
"Recently SEVENTEEN has made a comeback, and their energy on stage is just immense," said DONGHEON. "Though not as powerful, I hope VERIVERY can also send out such vibe and message to the audience one day."
Ultimately, VERIVERY's goal extends beyond the boundaries of its music. "Our goal is to make music that empowers many people around the world, and to have more people recognize and love VERIVERY."
