MANILA, Philippines – Following the issue wherein a Filipino K-pop fan reportedly stole P2.7 million pesos (around $36,300) to satisfy her fangirling addiction, members of the Philippine K-pop community discovered that the alleged issue may have been a lie after all.
Last March 5, a Philippine news magazine show called Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) aired an episode featuring an issue wherein K-pop fan "Bea" purchased a range of items with money stolen from her grandmother, including photo cards and albums of various K-pop artists such as New Jeans, ENHYPEN, NCT, BTS, and BLACKPINK.
Bea was brought up by her grandmother, who owns a plastic bag business in a Quezon City public market. Bea was employed by her grandma and was paid P350, or roughly $6.40 per day.
When Bea's K-pop collectibles got bigger, her grandmother's money ran out, leaving her with a P2 million supplier debt. The family realized that Bea had spent the money the store had lost on K-pop memorabilia after her aunt discovered tons of merchandise hidden inside her closet.
Yet, several Filipino K-pop fans expressed their doubts about the issue and blasted Jessica Soho for featuring Bea in their show. "#CANCELKPOPJAGIYAPH," “Bea,” "KMJS," and "Jessica Soho" trended in Twitter on March 7.
A Twitter user revealed that Bea hail from a rich family. Another Twitter post revealed that her family is often on vacation and that the episode may have been catered to as a marketing plan to help her family sell K-pop merchandise.
Meanwhile, K-pop fans expressed their rage and disappointment over the alleged incidents of theft on photocards, with some blaming KMJS, after a tweet about an expensive photocard of ENHYPENwas snatched to an ENGINE while traveling, went viral.
Many people are aware of how expensive these "pieces of paper" really are. Thus, the OP recommended other K-Pop lovers to be more cautious when wearing and hanging pricey photocards, while others guide how to keep their goods safe.
The KMJS team issued a statement condemning the issue of harassment against Bea’s family and reports of theft within the K-pop community after the episode aired.
