Ever since BTS members came of age to enlist in mandatory military service, all attention has been focused on whether the Military Service Act will be revised to allow the global K-pop group to be exempt from national duty.
Previously, Jin, born in 1992, was permitted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to postpone his enlistment in accordance with the Military Service Act amended in 2020, and his enlistment had been postponed until the end of this year.
The current Military Service Act stipulates that persons with exceptional skills in the fields of arts and sports prescribed by the Presidential Decree and recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism may be given an extension or exemption from service.
However, the enforcement ordinance of the Military Service Act does not include popular culture as a specialty in the field of arts and sports, so the issue of whether pop culture figures who promote national prestige can also receive this benefit had been raised.
The public has been focusing on whether the Military Manpower Administration will be allowing BTS to be exempted from military service, but there have been many delays in their response.
Then on October 17, HYBE released an official announcement explaining that the boy group will be enlisting in order starting with member Jin. The entertainment agency clarified that Jin withdrew his 'postponing enlistment until the age of 30' extension; he is expected to enlist as an active duty soldier as soon as a notice of enlistment is issued.
K-netizens commented, "People were saying this and that, I guess they made the decision. I know you will receive more love later. Please go and come back healthy," "BTS never said they wouldn't go, they always said they would enlist. It was the agency that was worried about sales and the government that wanted to use them that kept talking about this. They weren't even going to exempt them honorably and just made a whole controversy," "They need to leave BTS alone now. Thanks to them, Korea is well known overseas and people treat Koreans better abroad," "They just need to send everyone, whether in sports or arts," "I think it is better for them in the long run for them to serve in the military," "Good job. After their military service, they will be more successful," "Politicians need to stop using them now," and "BTS suffered so much. Hope everyone becomes quiet with this."
Good on them for calling out the fact that the government was using them! If it wasn't BTS, it would have been another group that found that success. It was so frustrating that they kept toying with the idea as all it did was bring hate to the individuals involved.
