With BTS becoming the new ambassadors of the Busan Expo, there was much expectation for the free BTS concert that is being planned for next month. The free BTS concert to be held in Busan on the 15th of next month to help Busan with the attraction for the 2030 World Expo (Expo) is less than a month away, but there have been various significant concerns along the way.
One of the biggest concerns raised is the event's expense and who will be taking the 7 billion KRW (5.1 million USD) bill for the concert. The bill for the major event will certainly be unavoidable, but it has been confirmed that the city of Busan and the government will not be paying for this free concert.
Unfortunately, this is not the only issue the event is facing. The event venue was changed to the Busan Asiad Main Stadium over safety and logistics concerns. Initially, the show was to take place on October 15 at 6 PM KST at Busan Ilkwang Special Stage, but the location only had one entrance to the venue. With many attendees expected to travel to the site, the location was changed to the Busan Asiad Main Stadium.
Now, concerns are raised due to the condition of the stadium. Nine roof panels of the stadium were blown away in a typhoon two years ago but have not yet been repaired due to the high cost and the fact that the production of the panels must be done in Germany. Therefore, the repair can only be done next year in June.
Asiad Main Stadium, built with 220 billion KRW (157.4 million USD) to host the 2011 World Cup, has been frequently torn apart by typhoons and strong winds. It has a semi-domed structure and is surrounded by 96 roof curtains. So far, 29 sheets have been damaged, including eight during Typhoon Maemi in 2003 and 6 during Typhoon Megi in 2004.
Two years ago, nine more roof panels were broken, and the repair cost, this time, is 330 million KRW (~236,100 USD) per sheet, with a total cost of 3.5 billion KRW (2.5 million USD) in all. With repairs planned next year, many are concerned that people from all around the world will have to see a damaged stadium which some say will be an embarassing look.
Although the concert will host only 50,000 attendees in person at a time, the concert will be broadcast worldwide, causing people from around the world to see BTS performing at a stadium with broken roof panels.
Alternative choices have been proposed to hide the damages, such as covering the damaged roof with large banners related to BTS and the expo, but safety concerns are also being raised.
I think they changed the venue again to be held on the beach.
