BTS' Jimin named an outstanding dancer among Korean idols by Dance Professor Oh Joo Yeon
BTS Jimin is well-lauded for his impeccable dancing and performance prowess on stage. Having majored in various dance genres, his ability to incorporate all the skills into K-pop dance has made him a force to be reckoned with worldwide.
Oh Joo Yeon is a Professor majoring in modern and ballet dance at San Diego State University and has published the first K-pop Dance theory book in the US, currently an Amazon bestseller on New Release in Communication and Pop Dance.
In an article by Korean media titled "Precise technique, error-free K-pop choreography...BTS is a modern dancer" in the Herald Economy issue, BTS's performance of 'Black Swan' was analyzed. In the piece, Jimin's dancing is described as leading and guiding the whole performance as such "Jimin's dance typically begins in the front of the ranks of neat and tidy upper body choreography. The quick and cool upper and lower body movements that characterize it are synonymous with those of modern dancers. When Jimin jumps, rolls and spins on the floor, the six members show elegant gestures flawlessly."
Their performance of 'Black Swan' is one that is done barefoot; it is dangerous and not fit for amateurs because it is easy to lose focus by intuitively feeling the slight balance difference due to friction with the floor, and even a single mistake by a toe can not go unnoticed. During his Weverse interview last year, Jimin was asked how the type of shoe he wears determines his performance, and he answered that when barefoot, he prefers to do traditional style because it feels more natural and dynamic when expressing himself. Having been well-versed in modern dance and previously danced barefoot, he was able to perfectly lead the dance taking charge of almost all of the song's dynamic and expressive moves.
In a separate interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, Jimin was mentioned by the Professor as an outstanding dancer among Korean idols together with SHINee's Taemin, adding that anyone who learns dance moves can perform, but there are a few performers who are endowed with condensed charisma, charm and stardom that fills a large stage alone.
Jimin is indeed an outstanding dancer and performer who is able to move audiences. On year-end shows, his performances have been impactful, and he even won the Plaque of appreciation from the Kim Baek Bong Fan dance conservation society in 2018 for his splendid fan dance at MMA. The esteemed music critic Lim Jinmo even exclaimed that when Jimin dances, it seems like he is not a human being. When you see Jimin dance, your tears flow because you can not compare what you see on TV with the real thing.
Professor Oh also praised Jimin in July during an interview with K-media as a very good dancer who blurs the lines between Western and Asian dance, as well as classical and contemporarydance. Jimin's legendary 'I Need U' 2019 MMA stage was used as an introductory to the book in a lecture by the Dance Studies Association; it is also the same image used as a cover of the book along with other images when he was practicing for the Black swan performance.
Jimin's greatness as a modern dancer was also referenced in an interview with K-media, saying that in the case of BTS, their live performances, such as tours, show a variety of colorful movements by utilizing the stage, unlike performances on social media. This is like performing modern dance, and in Jimin's case, he dances very well since he actually majored in modern dance.
