Will Banjun dramas ever make a return to the screen?
First airing through SBS' Good Sunday back in 2004, banjun dramas were all the rage. For those who may not be familiar with banjun dramas, it was a collection of mini-dramas. Banjun means "reverse," and it is described as, "Each Reverse Drama is usually unrelated to previous dramas, unless it is split into parts, and generally has a large twist in the story at the end. The two mini-dramas compete by votes cast on the main site. Generally, the show invites celebrities to act in a very humorous and sarcastic way not seen in regular dramas." Banjun dramas gained rapid popularity because it was short, simple, yet hilarious.
Not only that, these banjun dramas did not feature those you'd typically see on the screen, such as TVXQ, Danny Ahn, Jun Jin, Yoo Jae Suk, and so much more.
Banjun dramas were so enjoyable to watch because viewers could never guess what the plot twist would be, and the comedic relief within the dialogue, the script, and overall plotline, the acting skills of those who featured in these mini-dramas were also spotlighted as well.
With the boom in K-dramas over the last years, usually, viewers are stuck binge-watching sixteen or eighteen episodes, but seeing as how even "Business Proposal" spanned a total of twelve short forty-minute episodes garnered the attention of many viewers. That was because the drama was so well-paced. Short and simple was a nice change from the typically long dramas.
.
More or less, it is always great to see those who don't typically act, show off their skills on the screen, and can give these stars more opportunities to expand in their career as well. Not to mention, banjun dramas can also be a stepping stone for newer actors, actresses, and celebrities alike to start getting their names and faces out there.
Plus, not having to wait week by week to see what will come next is always a plus. If you're a K-drama fanatic, you know the amount of patience it takes just to watch the next episode, especially if the previous one left on a cliffhanger, which in most cases they do.
It'd be great to have banjun dramas nowadays, especially since many dramas that are currently airing are more on the serious side of things; it would be a breath of fresh air to get something funny, simple, and short, wouldn't it?
OMG yes! They were so low budget, but so good. I would love them back.
