SHINee's Key wasn't allowed to talk in his early debut days.
The November 14 episode of JTBC's 'Give Me a Meal' welcomed Key and Jang Woo Hyuk from the 1990s SM boy group H.O.T as the guests.
During the show, Key revealed, "In the beginning, SM told me not to talk because of my dialect/accent. But as you can see, I love talking." Jang Woo Hyuk, who's also from Gyeongsang province, said, "Same for me too, so I regret it sometimes. I think it would've been okay to speak with a dialect/accent."
Key added, "I was very embarrassed when I first came to Seoul." He explained that people had trouble understanding him due to his Gyeongsang dialect/accent.
It's so stupid that people normalize this sort of attitude of the companies. This little things is what demonstrate how fucked up the idol culture is. People talk differently, and so what? Big deal. The idol industry is somehow an effort to produce people who looks the same, talk the same, dresses the same, sing the same type of hit songs... I'm glad seeing idols who somehow subvert this mindset, even though they kept being shamed by the great public, like Sulli and Hyuna.
