What To Expect from Okasian's Debut Under YG Entertainment's Black Label
1.
Darker Music
Okasian isn't your average run-of-the-mill pop rapper. He doesn't exactly have a ton of love songs, and while his music has memorable hooks and slick production, he doesn't make feel-good sing-a-longs. With his arrival to Black Label, he's likely to provide some of the darkest music associated with YG Entertainment in the label's history. In terms of both sound and subject matter, Okasian stands out by rejecting the standards.
2.
YG Family Features
Hear us out on this one. Even though Black Label operates independently as a sub-label of YG (just like Tablo's HIGHGRND), it's in their nature as a hip-hop label to collaborate. Given Okasian's history of collaborations with big names like CL, G-Dragon and Jay Park, it's not out of line to suggest he'd do more songs with Korean rap's heavy hitters. Maybe we'll even get to hear him go bar for bar with YG's other flagship rap superstars, Bobby and Song Minho!
3.
Keith Ape
Most people became familiar with Okasian through Keith Ape's viral hit "It G Ma," a song that put Korean rap music on the map to a myriad of new listeners. As part of the "Underwater Squad," it makes sense for Okasian to collaborate with Keith Ape again (they were together under Hi-Lite), and it's likely that they're going to give us some of their most inspired and polished material yet. As both artists grow, more opportunities to shine over different types of songs are given. It'll be interesting to hear what the two can do together with a top dollar budget.
4.
Censorship?
An unfortunate side effect of working with a bigger label in Korea is having to deal with the Korean Communications Corporation's standards. It's a harsh reality that artists simply can't have certain words or phrases in their songs, lest they encourage a ban on their music and its promotion. In the case of an artist like Okasian, who has definitely had appeal because of his portrayal of hip-hop's darker side, there might be some slight changes to the way lyrics are written while under more scrutiny. Of course, this is only speculation, and it might turn out that Okasian simply doesn't make hyper-controversial music in the long run. That, or he might swap his taboo Korean curse words for trendy English ones.
5.
International Collaborations
After releasing a string of songs and videos through 88Rising and meeting a slew of western artists with the help of publications like Complex, Okasian is poised to have some big international collaborations in his future. Considering that rapper, Rich Chigga, has put out a record with America's Ghostface Killah, it's not too out-there to say that Okasian could rap alongside a big guest star. This is another place where the YG-Black Label connection could benefit Okasian heavily, considering that YG has relationships with American stars from Missy Elliott to Jaden Smith.
