misc.

Korea is a beautiful place, especially when it comes to shopping! While street vendors and classic boutiques may be all the rage, we can't forget the magic of "Duty Free." "Duty Free" shops are all the rage in Korea and if you don't know why, this list will be your new best friend! Check out 10 things you didn't know about "Duty Free" shops in Korea!

1. Location

"Duty Free" shops are particular and aren't just everywhere you go. You can only find them at international travel zones such as the airport or seaports.

2. Premier Tax-Free

There are a lot of wordy jargon involving the "Duty Free" shops, but this term is something you want to know! "Premier Tax Free" is a system in place used to pay for a portion of the taxes that would normally be included in the sale but then the goods are presented to customs and the sum is reimbursed on exit. Translation - all purchases are tax free! This saves anywhere from 7% - 33% on sales tax.

3. Your Guest Pass

Don't save your airplane ticket just for scrapbooking, you need to prove you are visiting the country with either your passport or plane ticket stub in order to shop at the "Duty Free."

4. Citizenship alters discounts

It may seem a bit unfair, however, U.S. citizens receive substantially higher duty exemptions than normal when they visit or transit certain locations.

5. Beauty Product Paradise

While the "Duty Free" usually caters to high-end luxury brands and cigars, South Korea's shops offer a lot of beauty products that out beat stores like TheFaceShop and Nature Republic's discounts and sales. For example, you can purchase 25 face packs from brands like TonyMoly or Missha for only $15. That is a steal!

6 . Alcohol

Get ready to sing PSY's "Hangover" because that is what you will have after you buy all the luxury imported liquor. Local and imported alcohol can be purchased at the "Duty Free" so you can avoid paying the insane prices at the local bars later.

7. Tech-savvy Shoppers Beware

While the "Duty Free" may be a shoppers heaven, selling everything far and between, electronics are deemed to be a not-so-great purchase at the "Duty Free." Depending on your location, some reviewers revealed that the items are claimed to be outdated, older models from bulk retailers.

8. Know your limits

Unfortunately, this paradise does have its quantity limitations. Depending on the place, there are limitations to the amount of items you can buy - especially in regards to alcohol and cigarettes.

9. Don't overspend

Know your budget and know your countries budget too! Some countries require you pay your countries tax on certain "Duty Free" items and costly expenses. Americans returning from overseas trips must pay 3% on the first $1,000 worth of merchandise over an $800 allowance. Do your research before you swipe your credit card like crazy.

10. KOREA'S MECCA 'DUTY FREE' SHOPS

Believe it or not, South Korea is known for having the biggest and best "Duty Free" shops around! The world's largest airport "Duty Free" is located in Incheon Airport, with over US$1.85 billion in sales in 2016. Jeju Island also sports a luxury "Duty Free" shop at the 'Lotte Hotel Jeju' as well that is popular among travelers all across Asia who are visiting the island!
