Cube Entertainment recently issued a statement that they would be taking legal action against composer Brian Lee.
Brian Lee was one of the composers of HyunA's song "DO IT" and Cube has accused him of double selling the song illegally to Nickelodeon's "Make It Pop" which you can read more about this here.
Brian Lee and his representative reached out exclusively to allkpop, issuing their own statement in response to Cube's accusations.
"In March 2014, Universal Music Group Korea invited Mr. Lee to come and work for one week with their writers and producers. In that time, he met with representatives of CUBE Music, Inc. ('CUBE'), who asked if he would stay for another week, which turned into two. During that time, he wrote songs with Jae Woo and Sancho for 4minute, BtoB, and HyunA. Most of the songs were a collaborative effort where each person would contribute lyrics, melody, or arrangement and we would agree to splits after the song places.
'DO IT,' however was an idea solely created by Mr. Lee. The melody, lyrics, chord progressions, and arrangement were all original to Mr. Lee. Mr. Lee did not transfer to CUBE any exclusive rights in and to the compositions, and in fact checked with Danny Park at CUBE with respect to the use of the composition and master recording prior to reproducing and delivering it to a US television network. CUBE confirmed at that time, around March of 2015, that it had no plans to use the composition or master recording. It should be specifically pointed out that Mr. Lee re-created the master recording of the composition which, as sole author and owner thereof, Mr. Lee had full and unfettered rights to do.
That brings us to this week, when CUBE released HyunA's version of 'DO IT,' which Brian authorized. Brian, however, informed Ji-Hyun Kwon at CUBE prior to said release that the composition had been re-recorded for a US television station, and even told CUBE to 'not release the recording' if they believed the prior use to be in conflict with their proposed release.
In short, the allegations against Brian Lee by CUBE are false and misleading. Mr. Lee will be looking into pursuing all legal remedies with respect to this false and defamatory public statement made intentionally by CUBE and CUBE Nayoung Jung."
