Oh became a free agent after his second season with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and nine years with the Samsung Lions in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).' In both Korean and Japanese professional baseball, he sports a career 1.81 ERA, 2.1 walks per 9 innings, and 10.7 strikeouts per 9 innings.
Oh's signing with the Cardinals marks him as the third South Korean to sign with a Major League Baseball (MLB) team this off-season, following the Minnesota Twins' Park Byung Ho and the BaltimoreOrioles' Kim Hyun Soo, both of whom were part of the KBO prior.
