REPLY 1988 - 'EPISODE 12'
Taek's dad, in pigtails, with Jin Ju.
Sun Woo and Bora are still sneaking around. But, even at a late hour, they still run into other people. They keep making plans to meet and hide from others, even changing where they meet up. Sun Woo, however, grows tired of using honorifics with her, and tells her their arrangement feels a bit one-sided. She cheers him up when he gets a good look at that short skirt she wore for him, and that cute smile.
Sun Woo's mom has a part-time job, which she hides from her son. But Sun Woo is trying to find out what's going on, and even skips school to tail her. He finds her with Taek's dad and little Jin Ju and they seem happy, which makes Sun Woo feel left out. When Taek's dad mentions her job, he follows her and discovers that she's doing manual labor. Initially upset, he eventually accepts the fact that she does it because she cares about him (thanks to Bora, who has a way of cutting through the BS).
Busted!
Everyone else seems to have secrets, too. Taek is smoking, and Dong Ryong is watching porn, eagerly taking the VHS to Taek's house so they can sneak a peek. Of course, it's not like they're not discovered, as Deok Seon fights with the boys when she bursts in on them, pressing "play" only to find Dong Ryong brought over the wrong tape.
Jung Hwan gets up super-early so that he can go to school sans Deok Seon, as he's still struggling with his crush. As the episode goes on, he gets so jealous around Taek and Deok Seon and their easy banter that he purposely avoids spending time with them. Eventually, Jung Hwan's mom sends him over to deliver dinner to Taek, and he sees his friend passed out in front of the baduk board, and takes the time to tuck him in...
Taek, sleeping like a baby after Jung Hwan tucks him in.
I love how all the characters really pull together and care for each other. Even Bora, icy as she is, really knows a thing or two about the human heart, as her voiceover this episode was quite profound. Even amid awkwardness and jealousy, they still pull it out of the hat and things seems to end up alright. And it never seems forced, either. These actors and actresses seems to have this great chemistry that make all their actions seem pretty genuine, and it's a wonder to watch.
I find it fascinating how another person's behavior affects you, particularly those close to you. Everyone probably has a "my parents humiliated me when..." story. But I wasn't entirely clear why Sun Woo's mom working would have affected him so. I'd be angrier that she lied to me, and felt more comfortable telling someone else other than her own son. I'm guessing he doesn't want to see his mom as anything other than his mom. He's the archetypal "good son," who does everything to make his mom feel good about herself and her role, and not to concern her with his own problems. How much of a blow might this be to his image of her if there's a baby on the way like the fortune teller claims?
Trouble in paradise: Sun Woo is mad at Bora
I think Jung Hwan is actually hilarious, though perhaps unintentionally? He has a hard time sorting out his feelings about Deok Seon, so his best option is to avoid her? She obviously likes hanging out with him, and I wish that was my biggest problem in high school. I just want to tell him to man up and confess. The worst that can happen is that she's not into you, but it seems like she is. He's just so stand-offish that there's not much room for love to blossom. I still think they end up together, but he's got to step up and show her that he's interested. It is cute, sometimes, how he plays the avoidance game.
Honestly, I'm a little worried about Taek. He pushes himself so hard to win tournament after tournament, it's got to be taking its toll on him, often going without dinner or sleep. True, this seems to be his lifeline, what he has to do to survive as an adult, but, from the preview, it sounds like something *does* happen. That's not good, especially since this drama does tend to toss people in the hospital quite a bit. And he's been losing games here and there, almost like he's trying to throw them just to get it over with, which also is a bad thing.
This episode felt a little slower for some reason. I know they packed a ton of stuff in here, but some of it felt a little like filler. I have a feeling that there will be a few things that won't carry to the next episode, but I've been wrong before.
Since it is the holidays, I've got another gift for you:
