SHINEE - 'MARRIED TO THE MUSIC'
Track List:
1. Married To The Music
2. Savior
10. Hold You
13. Chocolate
After the chart-topping release of 'Odd' a couple months ago, SHINee has dropped a repackage for it, 'Married to the Music.' Don't worry, all your favorites from 'Odd' are on here, in case you missed them the first time around. But, you get four new tracks as well in the repackage, including the title song "Married to the Music." In case the numbering sequence seems odd to you, I'm listing them by their track number on the album.
The title track "Married to the Music" is the club banger with synth slams, high-sounding chorus, and heavy beats. The problem is, I was pretty underwhelmed. For some reason, by the time we got to the chorus, I was bored. It seemed to have all the elements of a hit, but I was unconvinced. The song itself has some naughty parts, and talks about how the girl is the singer's music.
"Savior" is a high-tempo dance track, and one much more to my liking. With frantic synths and rapid-fire beats, as well as a frenetic chorus, this one speaks to me a lot more. It pretty much links the idea of a girl with a savior, making nods to the Christian idea of a savior in the lyrics. A bold thing to be sure, but within the frame of kickin' dance track, it works.
"Hold You" is a smooth tune, a mid-tempo fusion of Key and Minho's raps and clean singing by the other boys. It works pretty well, mainly because the croons are earnestly sung, and the raps are emotional. In case there's any confusion, the boys just want to hold you. ;)
The last song, "Chocolate," straddles the line between staccato and smooth. There are bleeping synths that give it a stop-start feel, but the crooning makes it smooth like a butter-creme confection. The boys' vocals really make this track pretty awesome, and there are stylistic choices that keep it from getting boring, as well a some sweet rapping. The song compares a girl to chocolate.
Overall, not a bad collection of songs -- well, except for the first one which did nothing for me. The tempo is pretty much where I like it, and there wasn't really a ballad in the bunch, even though there were nods to one with some slow jam sections. These songs seem very R&B inspired, which I think was the point. A nice gift for the fans -- the tracks you remember from 'Odd,' plus some new tracks interspersed with the old. What's not to like?
MV REVIEW
The boys get horrified in "Married to the Music."
Well, sort of. Despite the fact that they're smiling and dancing, there are a lot of CGI tricks that have the boys losing facial parts like eyes, nose, and lips, and there's a woman that seems to be at the heart of it all. There's confetti vomit and blowing out candles seems to engulf one in flames. But it's definitely party time.
The outfits here range from casual to blazer and tie, usually the nicer clothing is reserved for the dance sequences. There are a couple outrageous fashion choices, but they're usually drowned out by dim lighting and lightning-fast edits.
SHINee have always been known for their intense dances. Their synchronization and energy is usually mind-blowing. Here, they dial it back some, making it somewhat more freestyle and less synchronized than what we usually see. But it's still a thing of beauty to see them dance.
This is kind of amusing as it seemed like they wanted to make it a horror flick, but I mostly ended up laughing. I'm not sure if the humor was intentional, but it seemed like it. It also appeared they were having fun throughout, with warm smiles married (if you'll pardon the pun) to an upbeat song. I wanna party like this.
