MY LOVELY GIRL, EPISODE 5
Hyun Wook struggles with his tinnitus.
RECAP
Jae Young is starting a new company and has offered the boys in Infinite Power a spot there. Bandmate Rae Hoon also kicks Shi Woo out of the band. Hyun Wook dispatches agents to find Shi Woo, who turned off his cellphone and is missing. Se Na still does not get on well with the other artists, who have ostracized her. Hyun Wook is driving when a lane change prompts another driver to honk at him, and somehow this sound incapacitates him for a time (we saw this before with the monthly review). Hae Yoon confronts Jae Young about his actions, but he is unapologetic; he feels that Hyun Wook has stolen his woman (Hae Yoon) and the top spot at the company. Later that day, Hyun Wook debates with the rest of the executives at ANA about what to do regarding Infinite Power. He wants to let the boys go.
After the meeting, he discusses his decision to Hae Yoon and finds out she knows some personal things. He reminds her that she is his subordinate and that delving into his personal life is inappropriate, which leaves her in tears. Se Na gets sent mixing equipment and keyboard from Hyun Wook so she can get her song done faster. Later that night, Shi Woo calls up Se Na and reveals that he's hiding in a hotel and asks her to visit. She reveals his location to Hyun Wook, who offers to debut him as a solo artist. Late that night, Hyun Wook talks to Hae Yoon, telling her about his tinnitus and explaining that's why he can't make music. He has opened up to her and accepts a hug as comfort while Se Na unhappily observes unseen. Se Na buries herself in her work, staying up all night remixing her song. She lets Hyun Wook listen to it, but not Hae Yoon, whom she freezes out. As she prepares to leave the roof, Shi Woo pops up, and asks her, "Who are you to make a heart beat like this?"
Shi Woo ringing up Se Na
MY TAKE
So, now they clue in the clueless as to why Jae Young left, as if it wasn't obvious from the first time he showed up. I didn't expect him to jump ship, but I knew it wouldn't go well if he stayed. Jae Young makes a great villain, and I'm pretty sure we haven't seen the last of him. They say you're supposed to check your attitude at the door when you walk into work, but if your problems are work-related, that is a bit hard to do.
And I wanted a triangle, so I got one :) Well, a complicated one. Shi Woo likes Se Na, who likes Hyun Wook, who's more into Hae Yoon, who jilted Jae Young. Hyun Wook says that he's not ready to date (I think "never" is too strong a word), so I think it will take some time for him. But this episode certainly set things up between Shi Woo and Se Na like most people wanted. I kept thinking "Jerk" every time I saw him, and in some ways, he still acts like a spoiled brat. But I think there's a vulnerable side to him, and maybe Se Na will be a civilizing influence.
Hyun Wook listening to Se Na's song
I like how this shows a different side to the K-pop industry. Usually, all we see is the end product: smiling, dancing girls and boys, impossibly good-looking, belting out catchy tunes or ballads. We don't see the work that goes into putting a band together, the songwriting team, the blood, sweat, and tears, and the drama that goes with too many egos in the same room. I'm fully aware that this is a fictionalized account, just like 'Dream High' is not necessarily true to life inside the training school. But we catch a glimpse, and that is enough to whet my appetite for the time being.
Shi Woo: "Why aren't you answering your cell?"
So, what does Shi Woo want? Was that a confession of love? Do you think he and Se Na will end up together (I know from the comments that some of you do)? Do you want them together? And will this bring her into competition with Ra Eum, who also wants a piece of him? Why does Se Na's music not affect Hyun Wook the same way other music and sounds affect him? Fortunately for some of these questions, we'll know soon enough! :) And I'll be tuned in just like you, and back here writing. Same bat-time, same bat-channel.
