ANGEL EYES EPISODE 20 (FINALE)
Recap:
Soo Wan watches Dong Joo's ship leave the island, weeping and calling after him in anguish. Ji Woon visits his mother in jail and tells her he's going to Africa. Jin Mo runs away to the airport, intending to see his mother in America. Woon Chan punishes him with a cane, leaving marks on his legs. Later, Woon Chan is sorry about inflicting pain, realizing Jin Mo's just a child in pain. He cries, but Jin Mo appears and teaches him a spell to chase away hurt feelings. Dong Joo shows up on Wolmido to fish. He tells Soo Wan he's simply fishing there and that he will leave her alone; as long as he knows she's okay, he will be satisfied. The ahjussi counsels Soo Wan, asking what would happen when she really wants to see Dong Joo, but can't.
Dong Joo is injured trying to save the ahjussi's daughter from a speeding car. In the hospital, Soo Wan admits to an apparently unconscious Dong Joo that she lied and pushed him away, that she won't do it again. Dong Joo responds and strokes her hair. Woo Chul and Min Soo eat together, and the ahjumma that owns the restaurant tells her that he quit drinking and smoking and he feels much better now, especially now that he's back to work. After further adorable exchanges between Dong Joo and Soo Wan, the episode ends, our couple looking at the stars and confessing their love to each other.
Teddy carrying Hye Joo home after a night of drinking
My take:
Jin Mo continues his meltdown from last episode. I'm glad the writers addressed this because it seemed too easy. "Don't mind me, my wife's dead and I'm lying to my son." That didn't really sit well with me. At least they addressed his loss as well as Jin Mo's and the things that grief, fear, and anger can drive us to. I thought the punishment scene was a bit brutal and Woon Chan realized it too, just too late.
There's finally hope for Teddy and Hye Joo, as well. The couple drink, her ranting about how undeclared love is not love at all. She's also talks to the surrogate granny they've both adopted, and the granny tells her how Teddy likes someone. In an amusing turn of events, granny tells Hye Joo that it couldn't be her, and then lists the qualities Teddy told her of, many of which actually describe Hye Joo. Teddy finally admits that he likes her, but she is passed out. He resolves to tell her this every day (presumably when she's sober). I just wish it had been resolved sooner as I think they make a cute couple.
The happy couple kiss beneath the starlight
So it took a near death experience to make Soo Wan end her self-imposed exile. About time. She was really stubborn and adamant and made you want to scream at the screen. I think "tell him you love him" is probably the most oft-repeated phrase while watching K-Dramas. :) When they're together, and they're not beset by adversity, it seems like they don't have a care in the world. At least this episode made a bow to real life at the end when they visited the memorials of Jung Hwa and Director Yoon, reminding us that not everything is sweet and light, but sometimes, even tear-jerking stories have happy endings.
The amusing thing about this drama is that it ended much as it began. At first, Dong Joo pushes Soo Wan away and it ends up with Soo Wan doing much the same thing, albeit for different reasons. The resolution was a little quick, though, they go from 60 to 0 and suddenly they just pick up where they left off romantically? Anyone else feel that way? Well, no matter, they're back together and I got the ending I wanted. In the end, can anyone ask for more?
This is the very last episode folks. It's been a good run and I will miss this drama as I miss the others that end. For the last few weeks, it's been like a good friend that you can laugh and cry with and by far, my favorite of all the ones I review currently. At least we have good memories, and we can always go back and watch it again.
