Comic book writer intends on taking legal action against 'You Who Came From The Stars' for alleged plagiarism

Last month, a comic book writer named Kang Kyung Ok brought up similarities between her comic book 'Sul Hee' and the SBS drama 'You Who Came From The Stars.'  Although the drama's production company HB Entertainment denied all claims of plagiarism and expressed a desire to resolve this issue through a peaceful discussion, it appears that writer Kang Kyung Ok is now willing to take legal action according to her latest blog post on January 28 entitled 'My Final Stance.'

She decided she would not quietly overlook this situation after looking at messages from aspiring drama writers, the concerns of the broadcasting reps since the production press conference, examples of copyright damage cases, and more.

She again points out that it was possible for other people to write about the UFO sighting from the Gwanghaegun records.  After all, there were five works based on this, including the comic book 'Sul Hee' and the drama 'You Who Came From The Stars.' However, she points out that her comic book (published in 2007) was the very first one to base a story off the UFO sighting and that out of the five works, only hers and 'You Who Came From The Stars' had a lot of areas that overlapped, such as the specific use of 400 years, fate with someone from a past life, reunion between two people 12 years after one saved the other, a love triangle with a childhood friend, and more.

Kang Kyung Ok wrote, "At first, my goal was to discover the truth.  I also wanted to make people aware that my work was the first one already created with that set up." She had not initially wanted to create a whole legal affair over this, but many things brought her around to making this decision.  She said, "They cannot avoid any responsibility by just saying, 'I did not see [the comic book].'  I wanted to get it out there that there was not only the world's legal judgment but also a moral judgment.  As I was a writer for a long time, I felt like I had a social responsibility."

In response, HB Entertainment told OSEN on January 28, "As writer Kang Kyung Ok wants to take this alleged plagiarism problem to trial, the production crew will likewise take legal action.  'You Who Came From The Stars' was not plagiarized and the legal process will surely prove this."
