[Review][Single] Wooyoung "Sexy Lady"

A few Hottests were probably surprised when JYP Entertainment announced that Wooyoung would be the first 2PM member to release a solo album. After all, Junsu proved that he had solo star potential with his digital single "Alive", and Taecyeon demonstrated his musical talents earlier this year by performing two self-written songs at 2PM's 'Beautiful Days' concert. But that doesn't make Wooyoung a bad choice for a solo album. He's cute, charismatic, a great dancer and performer, and was one of the standouts on KBS' first season of Dream High.

So, with that said, I had high hopes for Wooyoung's solo debut, but his first single, "Sexy Lady", has failed to impress me.

With a title like "Sexy Lady", it's pretty clear from the start just what the song is going to be about. Wooyoung sings about being hit on by cute and innocent girls, but reveals that it's actually a sexy lady who is able to get his heart racing. It's not particularly interesting because the subject matter isn't very original or creative, and Wooyoung doesn't say anything scandalous enough to give the lyrics any kind of sexual shock factor that might have made the song more attention-grabbing.

The production isn't any better, with a generic electro-pop lead that's repeated to the point of annoyance, and a forgettable dance beat underneath.

Wooyoung is an okay singer, and thus he does an adequate job vocally on "Sexy Lady", but it's the actual arrangement that brings the song down more than Wooyoung's actual voice. It's very repetitious, and not in the good sense.

One of the biggest issues with "Sexy Lady" is that there seems to be a lot of discord between the actual music and the vocal track. It often feels like the beat doesn't fit with what Wooyoung is singing, which is a problem that also plagued RaNia's debut single "Dr. Feel Good", which actually isn't a whole lot different to "Sexy Lady" -- except for the fact that it's a whole lot better.

With such a weak song, you'd hope that Wooyoung would be able to somewhat compensate with a good concept, right? This is JYP Entertainment, who recently put together some eye-catching concepts and music videos for Wonder Girls ("Like This"), miss A ("Touch"), and Jo Kwon ("Animal" / "I'm Da One"). Unfortunately, even Wooyoung's concept is as dull as the song itself, with it resembling nothing more than a sexier version of 2PM's clubbing concept for their hit "Hands Up".

Overall, "Sexy Lady" makes for a very disappointing solo debut. From a member of one of K-Pop's biggest and best boy bands, this should have been much, much better.
