The ever popular Brave Brothers debuted his latest idol project this year under the name Brave Girls. As one of the more popular producers in Korea, Brave Brothers has plenty of experience working with Kpop artists (Big Bang, After School, SISTAR, U-KISS), so the idea of a Brave Sound-generated pop group only felt natural as the next step in this man's developing career in the music industry. Brave Girls is made up of Eun Young (leader), Seo Ah, Yejin, Yoojin, and Hyeran. As you have probably imagined, Brave Girls will carry on that 'electro-pop' style that Brave Sound has been notorious for producing in Kpop. Can you already hear the chirping synths, stamping drums, and the repetitive hook? -- Track List: 01. Intro (Ain't Nobody Like Brave Girls) 02. So Sexy 03. Do You Know? -- The first full song on this morsel of an EP doesn't waste any time laying down that very sound we've come to familiarize with Brave Brothers; "Hands up high, Brave Girls break yo ankle," Brave Girls muse as an infectious beat begins to unfold in the first 20 seconds of "So Sexy." This song defines everything the Brave Sound stands for - it's melodic, danceable, catchy, and most importantly, it's very well produced. There's a reason why agencies pull Brave Brothers in every direction to cook them up a hit because, well, he knows how to make them. "So Sexy" is one of those hits. Granted, it's nothing out of the ordinary, but it's definitely miles ahead of the game, quality-wise. The grinding synths and sudden breaks in pace give this song a life of its own. It could have done without the empty break 2:15 in (a shattering middle 8 would have worked wonders), but I'm guessing their Brave producer spared himself the time and added in the dance break for live performances now. In any way, "So Sexy" is a decent dance tune and is pretty classic Brave Brothers (So Sexy). The highlight of this microscopic album is Brave Girls in their ballad and lead single "Do You Know?", It's an enjoyable throwback to the R&B swag of the early 2000's. The entire song travels from the verses into the chorus like a wave of water. It's very smooth. You'll note right at the beginning that Brave Girls aren't messing around - these girls know how to sing, and they sound absolutely amazing doing so. Brave Girls exchange the sung and rapped lines really well, and the icing on the cake has to be the break down, where the lead vocalists shine the brightest. "Do You Know?" is sophisticated, classy, and kind of grown up compared to the rest of what Kpop has to offer right now. The Korean pop music scene is saturated with comebacks, debuts and so much more, but the up side is that agencies seem to have stepped up their game this year as opposed to one year ago, when music felt like it went down some musky drain. And I'm speaking on the fresh faces in Kpop, because debuts this year aren't half bad. Rather promising actually, and Brave Girls is one of them. If you enjoyed 2NE1's first mini album, you'll definitely find yourself enjoying this mini as well. -- -- 4.0/5 -- What are your thoughts on this mini album? -- Suggestions for a future review?
