SBS's new drama, "Sign", featured some disturbing content that reminded some viewers about the death of Deux's Kim Sung Jae. The pilot episode of the forensic drama aired on January 5th, and it revolved around the death of an idol group member, 'Seo Yoon Hyung,' (played by Supernova's Geonil). Investigators speculated that the singer's death was from drug abuse, and targeted the woman he was having an affair with. Prosecutor 'Jung Woo Jin' (played by Um Ji Won) interrogated the agency CEO and the idol's fellow members, asking questions like, "What were his lifestyle habits like? Did he ever use drugs?." The responses were minimal, at best. The singer's girlfriend, a stylist, was asked about her relationship to the singer as well, which only drew a meek response, as she revealed nothing. What caught the viewers' attention was the following scene, where the agency CEO demanded the stylist to "say nothing, since Yoon Hyung is dead and will not come back." Viewers immediately connected the content of the pilot episode to the death of Kim Sung Jae. Kim had made his solo debut through SBS's "Inkigayo" in 1995, and was found dead two days later at a hotel with 28 needle marks on his right arm. Investigators speculated that Kim died because of an overdose, but further investigations by the National Institute of Scientific Investigation found traces of animal anesthesia in his body, which led to speculations of murder. Kim's girlfriend was also reported to have purchased animal anesthesia, but no further investigation was pursued as there was a lack of evidence. Eventually, the case ran cold. Fans of Kim have taken the opportunity to request the case to be re-opened. Kim's younger brother, Kim Sung Wook, left a strong message on his mini-homepage, which stated, "I felt like I was suffocating while watching yesterday's 'Sign.'" Regarding the controversy, Min Ji En PD of "Sign" spoke with Newsen and commented, "I'm surprised that viewers connected the death of Kim Sung Jae to 'Sign.' Kim's case was a big controversy in Korea, but other cases like Michael Jackson's and James Dean's have been just as popular. It is true that we drew influence from Kim's case while researching other stars' deaths. However, we did not intend to spotlight Kim's death with this drama."
