Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta (Facebook), will visit South Korea for the first time in 10 years.
Zuckerberg is reportedly scheduled to meet with Samsung Electronics' Chairman, Lee Jae Yong. This is seen as an attempt to explore an 'AI semiconductor alliance.'
On February 21, the Seoul Economic Daily reported, "Zuckerberg will visit Korea at the end of this month and discuss cooperation plans related to artificial intelligence (AI) business with Chairman Lee Jae Yong."
According to the report, it has been almost 10 years since Zuckerberg's last visit to Korea back in June 2013. During that time, Zuckerberg held a direct meeting with Lee Jae Yong, who was then serving as vice-chairman, and their 7-hour discussion became a widely discussed topic.
The media predicts that the two will discuss AI semiconductor supply, as well as generative AI-related businesses, which have become a recent global trend.
The importance of securing semiconductors for learning generative AI is increasing, and global big tech companies are focusing on securing AI semiconductors. Zuckerberg is also deeply involved in this work.
Meta predominantly relies on Nvidia's chips for its operations. However, the company is actively seeking ways to lessen this dependency. To this end, Meta appears to have initiated discussions with Samsung Electronics, a key player in the semiconductor industry, signaling a potential collaboration between the two tech giants.
Meanwhile, it is reported that Zuckerberg is also arranging a meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
