Singer Wheesung (43, real name Choi Wheesung) was found dead at his home on the 10th.

According to the police and fire department, Wheesung was discovered collapsed in an apartment in Gwangjin gu, Seoul, at around 6:29 p.m. His family reported the incident, prompting emergency responders to be dispatched to the scene.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of death, as they believe a significant amount of time had passed before he was found. The police are considering the possibility of an overdose or suicide. They stated that there were no signs of criminal activity, such as external intrusion, and confirmed that they are looking into whether a will was left and the exact circumstances surrounding his passing.

The news of his death has deeply saddened fans and colleagues. Wheesung was scheduled to hold a joint concert with singer KCM at the Daegu EXCO Auditorium on the 15th. Just four days before his passing, he posted on social media with the caption, "See you on March 15th when the diet is over."

Wheesung made his debut in 2002 with his first album 'Like a Movie' and quickly rose to fame with his hit song 'Can’t I?'. He continued to gain popularity with songs such as 'With Me', 'The Day We Met Again', 'Incurable Disease', and 'One Year'.

In addition to his solo career, Wheesung was known for his lyric-writing skills. He contributed lyrics to many hit songs, including Younha’s Password 486, Lee Hyori’s HEY MR. BIG (Boys in Girl), T-ara’s Crazy Because of You, Orange Caramel’s Magic Girl, TWICE’s Dance The Night Away, Ivy’s Sonata of Temptation, and Ailee’s Heaven.

In 2017, Wheesung launched his independent label Real Slow Company. However, his career took a significant emotional toll after his longtime manager unexpectedly passed away, which reportedly left him in a state of deep shock.

Wheesung faced legal troubles in 2021, when he was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of probation after being convicted of illegally administering propofol, a psychotropic sleep anesthetic. The court found that he had purchased 3,910 ml of propofol for 6.5 million won and administered 3,690 ml on 11 occasions between September and November 2019.

In March and April 2020, he was found unconscious in Songpa gu and Gwangjin gu after injecting etomidate, another anesthetic. While etomidate has similar effects to propofol, it was not classified as a narcotic at the time. However, on February 28th, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that etomidate and six other substances would now be classified as narcotics or psychotropic drugs under an amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Narcotics Control Act.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wheesung’s passing.
