Seungri, a former member of the K-pop group Big Bang, has stirred controversy after being spotted at a nightclub in Hangzhou, China, accompanied by 10 bodyguards.
Seungri was expelled from the South Korean entertainment industry in 2018 following the 'Burning Sun' scandal. He was convicted of charges including prostitution and procuring prostitution, for which he served an 18-month prison sentence.
The recent sighting of Seungri at a high-end nightclub in Hangzhou has quickly spread on Chinese social media, with many expressing discomfort and outrage. Some netizens commented, “How can someone who can’t even show his face in Korea come to China?” The fact that the club’s minimum spending requirement was reportedly 8,000 yuan (approximately $1107) has added to the controversy.
Chinese media have criticized Seungri’s actions as a “challenge to the moral baseline of the Chinese people.” They also raised concerns about the fact that some Chinese fans continue to support Seungri despite his criminal record, questioning the moral standards and values within Chinese society.
Complaints about Seungri’s activities have been flooding the Chinese citizen service hotline, 12345. Authorities in Hangzhou have stated that further verification is needed to determine whether Seungri’s event was properly registered with the Ministry of Culture. According to regulations, all cultural and artistic activities must be registered with the ministry, and the results of the investigation will be announced after the ministry completes its review.
Seungri’s recent activities have drawn criticism not only in China but also across Asia. Following his release from prison, Seungri has been spotted at clubs in Cambodia and Malaysia, further fueling public outrage.
