On February 11th, 2025, a production press conference for Channel A's new weekend drama 'The Witch' took place at The Saint, D-Cube City in Guro, Seoul. The event saw the attendance of the lead actors Jinyoung, Roh Jeong Eui, Im Jae Hyeok, Jang Hee Ryeong, and director Kim Tae Gyun.
Premiering on February 15th, 'The Witch' is based on the webtoon by the renowned Kang Full, whose works, such as 'Moving' and 'Light Shop,' have captivated audiences with their unique world-building. The drama tells the mystery romance of a woman named Mi Jeong, who has cut herself off from the world, and Dong Jin, a man who seeks to break the curse surrounding the witch. Directed by Kim Tae Gyun, known for his film Dark Figure of Crime, the drama promises an intriguing plot.
The cast expressed their excitement about joining Kang Full's universe. "We understand how powerful Kang Full's stories are for webtoon fans, and we feel honored to be a part of his world," they shared in unison.
One of the most talked-about aspects of the drama is Jinyoung's return to the screen after his military service. Having completed filming before enlisting, this drama marks his first project after his discharge. "I'm more excited than burdened. It's my first drama after returning, so I'm just happy," he said with enthusiasm.
Jinyoung plays Dong Jin, a data mining genius who strives to prove that Mi Jeong is not the witch she is believed to be. "Dong Jin is a character with both genius and ordinariness. I tried to express his genius through his voice, while showing his ordinary side in various ways through interactions with other characters," Jinyoung explained.
Roh Jeong Eui, who plays Mi Jeong, the woman disconnected from society, said, "I wanted to convey the loneliness of Mi Jeong through her eyes, intensifying her sense of isolation."
Since the drama is based on a popular webtoon, one of the main concerns is ensuring the adaptation is faithful to the original. The actors discussed how 'The Witch' featured more communication on set than most projects. Jinyoung mentioned the long discussions with the makeup and costume teams, considering every detail like different glasses and the textures of the outfits to best express his character’s depth.
Interestingly, this marks a reunion for Jinyoung and Roh, who last worked together 12 years ago on the 2012 drama 'Dream High 2.' Despite the time gap, their characters rarely cross paths in the drama. Laughing, they shared, "Next time, let's make sure to film together!" and joked about meeting again in another 12 years.
