IVE's Jang Won Young has partially won her appeal trial in a damages lawsuit against YouTuber Sojang, with the court reducing the compensation amount.
On the 22nd, the 9-3rd Civil Appeals Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judges Yoon Jae Nam, Seon Ui Jong, and Jeong Deok Su) ruled that YouTuber A, the operator of the now-deleted YouTube channel 'Tal-deoksu-yong-so,' must pay 50 million won (approximately 39,000 USD) in damages. This is half of the 100 million won initially awarded in the first trial.
Jang Won Young filed the lawsuit in October 2023, asserting that YouTuber A had continuously uploaded videos spreading false information on the channel, thereby damaging her reputation.
YouTuber A is accused of defaming celebrities, including Jang Won Young, by uploading 23 defamatory or false videos on 'Tal-deoksu-yong-so' between October 2021 and June 2023. It was revealed that the YouTuber earned 250 million won in revenue over two years, some of which was used to purchase real estate. The channel has since been deleted.
Separately, Starship Entertainment, IVE's agency, has also filed a damages lawsuit against A, with the first trial still ongoing.
In addition to the civil cases, YouTuber A was indicted for defamation of Jang Won Young. In the first trial of the criminal case, was sentenced to two years in prison with three years of probation. The prosecution has appealed the verdict, and the second trial is currently underway.
