The second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol is scheduled to be voted on this Saturday, leading to the rescheduling of variety shows and dramas on major broadcast networks.
On December 13, JTBC announced its official position, stating, "The schedule has been adjusted on Saturday, December 14, due to a 'News Special Broadcast'." As a result, the 462nd episode of 'Knowing Bros' and the 4th episode of the weekend drama 'The Tale of Lady Ok' will not air as originally scheduled. Instead, episode 4 of 'The Tale of Lady Ok' will be broadcast at 10:30 PM on Sunday, December 15.
The postponement of 'The Tale of Lady Ok,' a highly discussed drama, has disappointed fans. The series has garnered acclaim both domestically and internationally for breaking away from traditional historical drama conventions, focusing on the realistic struggles of slaves and following the journey of the protagonist, Gu Deok Yi (played by Lim Ji Yeon), as she overcomes adversity. The drama's viewership started at 4.2% in the Seoul metropolitan area for its first episode and rose to 8.1% in the metropolitan area and 7.8% nationwide by episode 3. This steady rise in ratings has raised concerns about how the preemption may affect its ongoing momentum.
KBS and MBC are also unable to avoid the fallout from the impeachment proceedings. KBS 2TV's music-themed reality show 'I'm a Singer' has confirmed its preemption this week. MBC has announced that its variety show 'Hangout with Yoo' will also be rescheduled. Meanwhile, MBC’s music program 'Show! Music Core' will air earlier than usual at 10:50 AM. MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama 'When the Phone Rings' is still scheduled to air at 9:50 PM as usual, but there is a possibility of schedule changes depending on the results of the impeachment vote.
Channel A's weekend drama 'Marry YOU' will also be rescheduled once again this Saturday, following last week’s reschedule.
Meanwhile, at 2 PM on the same day, the second impeachment motion, which was proposed by 191 opposition and independent lawmakers, was reported during a plenary session of the National Assembly. The impeachment motion cites violations of the Constitution and laws, including "violating the principle of popular sovereignty and the separation of powers" and "abusing martial law."
Unlike the first impeachment motion, the second motion specifically includes the claim that under the president's command, martial law forces and police attempted to arrest members of the National Assembly, serving as an additional reason for impeachment.
The National Assembly plans to hold a plenary session at 5 PM on December 14 to vote on the second impeachment motion. Broadcasters are expanding their news special broadcasts to deliver real-time updates on the impeachment vote, and it is expected that the results of the vote may further impact the weekend's broadcast schedules.
