Winner’s Song Min Ho faces widespread backlash over alleged military service misconduct.
The controversy surrounding Winner member Song Min Ho’s alleged misconduct during his alternative military service continues to grow. From investigative programs collecting tips to Seoul Mayor Oh Se Hoon ordering a comprehensive inspection of social service agents, the issue has sparked nationwide attention.
On December 24th KST, Mayor Oh stated, “Recent allegations regarding a celebrity’s negligence during alternative service have raised concerns. It is unacceptable for the misconduct of a few to create social resentment and foster negative perceptions about military obligations.”
He continued, “I have instructed an urgent, comprehensive review of all social service agents under Seoul City and its affiliated organizations. Based on the findings, we will take stern action and, if necessary, propose system reforms to the Military Manpower Administration to ensure fair military obligations.”
The controversy began on December 17th when Dispatch reported allegations of Song Mino falsifying attendance and neglecting his duties. According to the report, Song Min Ho started his alternative service at the Mapo Facilities Management Corporation on March 24th, 2023, before being transferred to the Mapo Resident Welfare Facility a year later. The transfer, arranged by his supervisor, identified as L, has also come under scrutiny due to questions about their relationship.
In October, Song Min Ho took a six-day vacation to Hawaii. Dispatch reported that he was absent from his workplace during the second week of November, despite claims from L that Song Min Ho had returned to work after his vacation. Requests for evidence, such as attendance logs or CCTV footage, were denied by L, citing privacy concerns. Dispatch also highlighted repeated justifications of leave, sick days, and hospitalizations for Song Mino’s absences.
Previous allegations, such as those concerning Song Min Ho’s hairstyle during service, have also resurfaced. One whistleblower claimed, “There was a controversy about Song Min Ho’s hair length during service, and when the Military Manpower Administration conducted an inspection, he was reportedly rushed to the office after being called at home.” Another added, “Regardless of his celebrity status, alternative service is still part of the national duty. Is it fair for someone to avoid attending work for nearly a year while fulfilling military obligations? I hope for a thorough investigation.”
Song Min Ho’s agency, YG Entertainment, responded, stating, “It is difficult to provide detailed information regarding the artist’s service. However, the sick leave was an extension of pre-existing treatment, and other leave days were used in accordance with regulations.” Meanwhile, the Military Manpower Administration has reportedly launched an investigation into the allegations.
Adding fuel to the fire, SBS’s investigative program 'Unanswered Questions' announced it is seeking tips on misconduct involving celebrities in alternative service, further increasing public scrutiny of Song Min Ho and other entertainers.
Song Min Ho previously disclosed diagnoses of panic disorder and bipolar disorder. He began his alternative service in March 2022 and was discharged on December 23rd. However, reports of him taking sick leave on his final day of service have reignited the controversy.
