Actress Song Ji Hyo takes on the challenge of becoming a haenyeo in ‘Deep Dive Korea: Song Ji Hyo’s Haenyeo Adventure’
The documentary 'Deep Dive Korea: Song Ji Hyo’s Haenyeo Adventure' is the first original co-production project between BBC Studios and JTBC, following Song Ji Hyo as she embarks on one of the greatest challenges of her life: becoming a haenyeo (female diver).
In this project, Song Ji Hyo takes on intensive training required to become a haenyeo, including free diving and other daily activities alongside legendary haenyeo. With a unique connection to marine life—her mother was a swimmer and her aunt was a haenyeo—Song Ji Hyo has always had a deep interest in ocean activities. Through this project, she is expected to undergo a compressed training regimen to quickly adapt to the haenyeo lifestyle, preparing both physically and mentally for this demanding role.
The project will also showcase the breathtaking landscapes of Jeju Island, which is recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The island’s haenyeo culture was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, adding to the global intrigue surrounding this unique way of life.
Song Ji Hyo expressed her excitement through her agency Nexus E&M, stating, “I am honored to participate in a project that helps introduce Korea’s precious cultural heritage to the global stage. Through my challenge, I hope more people will learn about Korea’s haenyeo culture and show interest in K-content. I want to share the real lives of these haenyeo, not just a simple experience, and show how I grow from this journey. I hope many people look forward to it.”
Deep Dive Korea: Song Ji Hyo’s Haenyeo Adventure is set to air across Asia in early 2025 on JTBC and BBC Earth.
