Prosecution has recommended a 4-year prison sentence for YouTuber Sojang on the charges of defamation and slander.
Sojang, also known as Park, is known for running a YouTube channel that circulated baseless rumors and false information against a number of celebrities, often leading to irreparable harm to their reputation. According to reports on October 23, Sojang has admitted to all charges during her trial and submitted a handwritten letter of apology.
The Incheon District Court's Criminal Division 11, presided over by Judge Kim Saetbyeol, held the sentencing hearing for Park around 11:30 AM on the 23rd. She was indicted for defamation and insult under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection. The prosecution requested a 4-year prison sentence and a fine of 211,421,152 won ($152,577.94 USD), stating, "She insulted the victims on five occasions and actively posted false information that damaged their reputation."
The prosecution further emphasized that she had interfered with the victims' agency management activities and operated a paid membership service, noting that the content of the videos targeted the victims' appearance, character, and romantic relationships.
Sojang's lawyer stated, "She acknowledges all charges. Her actions were reckless, but not solely for profit." The lawyer added that Park is currently engaging in volunteer work and receiving mental health treatment, further mentioning efforts to reach a settlement with the victims. According to the lawyer, they attempted mediation in civil court and faced difficulties, but they wish to continue trying to settle. During the hearing, Park read her letter of apology, expressing regret for the pain she caused the victims and reflecting on her actions. She admitted to feeling overwhelming guilt and said she wanted to make a positive impact on society through his volunteer efforts.
Previously, Sojang's YouTube channel had produced and distributed false content about EXO's Suho and aespa's Karina, profiting from it, which led to a complaint from their agency, SM Entertainment. Park also faced defamation lawsuits from Jang Won Young and Starship Entertainment as well as from Kang Daniel for which he received 10 million won ($7218.52 USD) ruling in the first trial last month.
The sentencing date for Park is set for December 18 KST.
