Where are the variety shows centered around Gyopos?

AKP STAFF

Viewers have enjoyed a wide variety of shows over the years, from classics like “Love Letter” and “Heroine 6” to more recent hits like “Running Man” and “How Do You Play?” However, with the rise of social media, we're seeing more K-stars transitioning from traditional television to YouTube channels, creating diverse content. From mukbangs and food reviews to casual interviews with various stars, there’s been a plethora of new formats. Yet, one type of content that remains underexplored is a program centered around gyopos.

For those unfamiliar, ‘gyopo’ refers to the Korean diaspora—Koreans living or born overseas. Historically, gyopos were rare in the K-entertainment world, but with the global rise of Korean culture, this is changing. The first wave of gyopos in K-pop included Danny and Teddy from 1TYM, Kim Johan, Chong Jaeyoon, and Lee Joon from Solid, and more. Now, artists like Jessi, Brian Joo (Fly to the Sky), Mark Lee (NCT), RIIZE Anton, actors Ahn Hyo Seop (Canada), and Daniel Henney are making their mark. Despite this growing presence, a variety program dedicated solely to gyopos is still missing.

While there are a few programs featuring gyopos, such as those produced by DIVE Studios with Eric Nam and shows like XYOB, these are few and far between when compared to the vast array of other variety shows available. This scarcity raises an important question: why haven't more producers and content creators tapped into this unique niche?

Despite the growing popularity and global reach of K-culture, and the increasing number of gyopos making their mark in the entertainment industry, there seems to be a gap in content that specifically highlights their experiences and perspectives. This oversight is puzzling, especially given the success and popularity of the few existing programs that do feature gyopos.

Imagine a show featuring Jessi, Brian Joo, and Keeho—known for their chaotic yet comedic antics—paired with more introverted gyopos like RIIZE Anton and Ahn Hyo Seop. This dynamic mix would create a unique program, appealing to a global audience with their ability to switch between English and Korean. Gyopos’ unscripted reactions and comments offer a fresh take, differing from the typical variety shows we see daily.

Such a program would also provide stars the opportunity to connect with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences. There’s something heartwarming and reassuring about finding a community that truly understands your unique lifestyle and upbringing, creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie. This connection not only enriches the content but also resonates deeply with viewers who may share similar backgrounds or simply appreciate the diverse perspectives.

Consider the success of Jessi’s “Showterview” and XYOB which have gained traction for their hilarious commentary and unconventional format. These shows have demonstrated that there is a significant audience for content that breaks away from traditional formats and embraces authenticity and humor. Similarly, P-SICK University has become popular among global audiences by inviting bilingual stars, showcasing the appeal of content that bridges cultural and linguistic gaps, even though not all guests are gyopos.

These successes suggest that there is a promising area for producers and screenwriters to explore. By creating more programs that highlight the experiences of gyopos, they can tap into a rich vein of content that is both entertaining and meaningful. Such shows could offer fresh and relatable perspectives, appealing to a global audience and providing a platform for stars to share their unique stories. This could not only diversify the entertainment landscape but also foster greater understanding and appreciation of the diverse backgrounds that make up the global Korean diaspora.

i don't think that's a problem. since I see them alot in other korean variety shows. and i personally prefer to see them more in Korean contents rather than westernized shows and programs.
