Singer Kim Ho Joong, accused of a DUI hit-and-run, could face up to 30 years in prison, according to legal experts.
On June 17 KST, lawyer Park Ju Hee commented on stating, "Many lawyers are sympathetic about the severity of this case. If an agreement had been reached on the spot, the punishment might have only been for drunk driving." They elaborated that the most serious charge against Kim Ho Joong is leaving the scene of an accident without taking proper measures, which alone carries a minimum sentence of one year and can lead to up to 30 years in prison.
Prosecutors have extended Kim Ho Joong's detention until June 19 KST. Lawyer Park noted, "The prosecution's final decision is pending. With only two days left, it remains to be seen whether they will proceed with detention indictment or release him and pursue a non-detention indictment."
Lawyer Park Ju Hee also highlighted the public's harsh view on DUI offenses, especially in Kim Ho Joong's case, where he not only caused an accident but also lied about it publicly. "Given these factors, it's likely his return to the public eye will take some time," she added.
Kim Ho Joong is accused of colliding with a taxi on a road in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, on May 9 and fleeing the scene. His manager initially appeared at the police station wearing the clothes Kim Ho Joong had on during the accident. However, it was later confirmed through police investigation that Kim Ho Joong was the driver. He reported to the police 17 hours after the incident for questioning.
Kim Ho Joong recently reached a settlement with the taxi driver affected by the accident. His representatives explained that the delay was due to difficulties in exchanging contact information during the police investigation stage. However, some critics argue this could be an attempt to reduce his sentence.
Furthermore, Kim Ho Joong has been banned from all three major broadcasters. KBS decided on a temporary ban on his appearances due to the social controversy. SBS edited out his recent appearances in episodes 378 and 383 of 'My Little Old Boy' and discontinued the replay service of episodes he appeared in four years ago.
This incident has undoubtedly put a significant dent in Kim Ho Joong's career and public image, with his return to the entertainment industry uncertain for the foreseeable future.

This article is confusing his case is for more than a hit and run and is max 30 years it’s not set yet. (Drunk driving, hit n run, false claims and destroying evidence). Like the lawyer said If an agreement had been reached on the spot, the punishment might have only been for drunk driving. Looks like he has been causing problems even before all this too. (Illegal gambling and battery allegations, conflict with ex manger, allegedly assaulting his ex girlfriend and evading military service). His career really only took off in 2020 and has been a walking mess since.
