The Korean Music Copyright Association, abbreviated as KOMCA, is a South Korean non-profit copyright body dedicated to safeguarding the intellectual property rights of its members. Established in 1964, it stands as Asia's second-largest collective rights management organization for musical works and provides vital support to its members by protecting their copyrighted content.
Copyright owners, including authors, composers, arrangers, and music publishers, can join KOMCA as associate members. Each year, a select group of associate members who have engaged in substantial musical creation are promoted to full members by the board of directors. Full members are entitled to participate and vote in the annual general meeting and may also be nominated for positions on the board of directors.
Since G-Dragon became the first K-pop idol to gain full KOMCA membership in 2011, only four fourth-generation idols have become full members of the Korean Music Copyright Association, demonstrating their multifaceted talents.
In 2023, Stray Kids' 3RACHA trio, comprising of Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han, attained full membership status in the Korean Music Copyright Association, marking a groundbreaking achievement as the first fourth-generation idols to do so. Since their debut in 2018, these three talented and skilled artists have played integral roles in crafting the majority of the boy group's discography, lending their talents to smash hits such as "God's Menu," "Maniac," and "Thunderous."
Soyeon, the multifaceted leader and talented rapper of (G)I-DLE, has showcased her exceptional songwriting and producing prowess through her involvement in crafting numerous hit tracks for the group, such as “Tomboy,” “Nxde,” “Queencard,” “Super Lady,” and “Fate,” among others. In 2024, Soyeon became the first and only fourth-generation female idol to gain full membership in Korean Music Copyright Association.
As the fourth generation of K-pop continues to shape the future of the industry, the involvement of idols in organizations like KOMCA signals their talents and skills.
Love to see idols taking control of the creative process and making their own music! Incredible artists all 4 of them!
