South Korean rock sensation MEMI — a singer-songwriter based in Seoul, South Korea, who is known for her previous single releases such as "Guitar Pick" and "Thin Lips Club", as well as her role as guitarist on Korean indie rock band 24HOURS — has released her first-ever solo EP 'M3MI' today, marking a key milestone for one of the most exciting acts to emerge from Korea’s thriving rock scene this year.
The five-track EP consists of the iconic track "Guitar Pick", which propelled MEMI to fame after its release in February this year and boasts over 2 million streams on Spotify, recently released single "NY(f)C", as well as three new tracks in "Bassist", "Waikiki", and "Sorry for my late reply".
Sharing about the new singles, MEMI reveals that "Bassist" is an garage rock ode to bassists all over the world: “As a guitarist, I always felt that bassists are so cool, and they are always so sexy and hot when they perform on stage!”
"Waikiki" is a track inspired by MEMI’s trip to Hawaii when she was solo traveling there: “When I was hanging out alone in Hawaii, I felt so free and happy, and I conveyed my feelings of joy in the guitar riff in this track. The whole point of this song is to focus on a heavy and funky guitar riff, paired with silly lyrics to let the listeners enjoy a fun time!”
"Sorry for my late reply" is a contrast from MEMI’s usual punk sound that is filled with freedom and joy. As her first sad song, the track is MEMI’s call to a loved one that she lost almost 10 years ago, and she dedicates the last track of this EP to this person who she dearly misses, as well as anyone who needs comfort in their lives at the moment.
Alongside the release of her solo EP, MEMI will also close off a successful year with her first solo show in South Korea on December 22 in Seoul.
