In the upcoming Netflix drama 'Gyeongseong Creature,' Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee are set to captivate audiences with their restrained romance set against the backdrop of Gyeongseong. While the genre centers around creature features, it's the chemistry between Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee that is expected to add an intriguing layer to the narrative.
The production press conference for 'Gyeongseong Creature' (written by Kang Eun-kyung and directed by Jung Dong-yoon) was held on the 19th at Layer20 Studio in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Actors Park Seo Joon, Han So Hee, Soo Hyun, Kim Hae-sook, Jo Han-chul, and director Jung Dong-yoon were in attendance.
In the drama, Park Seo-joon plays Jang Tae-sang, the wealthiest asset owner in Bukchon and the head of the Geumokdang pawnshop. He shared, "Jang Tae-sang has grown through hardships to become the head of Geumokdang. I've put in effort to portray the life he's lived," adding that his character possesses a variety of charms.
Responding to MC Park Kyung-lim's comment about the production team's goal to create the 'hippest man in Gyeongseong,' Park Seo-joon said, "We put a lot of thought into creating a stylish look, from the costume to various authentic details. I believe the first impression of the drama will be its overall look," expressing his hope that "the audience will appreciate the cool look we've crafted with so much dedication." Park Seo-joon revealed that the first scene shot for 'Gyeongseong Creature' was a torture scene. He shared, "The first shoot took place on a cold day during a torture scene. I was continuously drenched with water while filming, and it felt like an initiation ceremony. It made me wonder what the end would be like if this was just the beginning," he said jokingly.
In 'Gyeongseong Creature,' set in 1945, Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee play characters with distinct backstories, unfolding a restrained melodrama. Park Seo-joon commented on his chemistry with Han So-hee, saying, "Initially, we didn't have many scenes together, which made me increasingly curious. But when we finally did meet, I felt like saying, 'I've missed you, So-hee.' There were emotions that built up as we delved into scenes that required a lot of thought and preparation. We focused on portraying a restrained melodrama, concentrating on the situation at hand." In 'Gyeongseong Creature,' Han So-hee, playing the role of Yun Chae-ok, a tracker who sets out to find her mother who disappeared ten years ago, shared, "Chae-ok and Tae-sang had things they needed to protect, which necessitated their restraint." She joked about the frequent injuries on set, "Every time we met, it seemed like someone was hurt, so restraint was inevitable, even if we didn't want it."
Addressing her facial injury during filming, Han So-hee assured at the press conference that she was okay, saying, "I enjoy action, but I regret not being more proactive. It's not just me who gets hurt during action scenes; the stunt team and all the actors involved do too." She reflected, "What I overlooked was the need to distinguish between what I could and couldn't do. Perhaps recognizing this could have prevented injuries. Going all out doesn't always work, and I was concerned my injury might hinder filming."
Soo Hyun, who plays the role of the aristocratic Japanese lady Maeda Yukiko, said, "She appears beautiful but her true intentions are unknown, and she is the only one who befriends Tae-sang." She admitted struggling with the Kyoto dialect, "It was difficult. I felt a lot of pressure as the only character using a dialect." She added, "I've played secretive roles before, but Yukiko required the most restraint."
Kim Hae-sook, playing the role of Na Wol-dang, the housekeeper of Geumokdang and a family-like figure to Jang Tae-sang (played by Park Seo-joon), was overwhelmed by the historical accuracy of the art. She expressed her awe, "I was amazed. I had never seen such sets before and was upset to hear they would be destroyed after filming. The details, from the secret vault to the props, were so elaborate and magnificent, it felt like stepping into that era."
Jo Han-chul, playing Yun Chae-ok's father and tracker Yun Jung-won, expressed his surprise at being cast, "I was astonished and felt it was the most magnificent role I've been given, despite previously playing villains.
'Gyeongseong Creature' is a creature thriller set in the dark times of Spring 1945, where two young people confront a monster born out of greed. Part 1, comprising 10 episodes, will be released on the 22nd, and Part 2 will meet the audience on January 5 next year.
Really looking forward to this one!
