Former EXO member Kris Wu faced a new trial on Tuesday, July 25, as he appealed the verdict for his disturbing actions involving women.
The Beijing No 3 Intermediate People's Court, in compliance with privacy protection laws for the victims, conducted the trial behind closed doors.
The court stated that the ruling would be announced at a later date, according to their statement on Weibo, a Chinese platform similar to Twitter.
Previously, on November 25, 2022, the Beijing Chaoyang District People's Court sentenced Wu to 13 years in prison along with deportation upon completing his sentence. This sentence was for his involvement in the rape and assembling a group for promiscuous activities. However, dissatisfied with the verdict, Kris decided to appeal to the intermediate court.
During the hearing, the court adhered to the required protocol and informed the Canadian embassy officials, ensuring that Kris Wu's litigation rights were duly protected.
Once a popular singer and actor with over 50 million followers on Weibo, Kris Wu's reputation took a significant hit when a woman named Du Meizhu made serious allegations against him in June 2021. She claimed that Wu had enticed young women, some underage, by posing as a talent scout, leading them into having sexual encounters with him.
Following his detention by Chaoyang police, various brands promptly cut ties with the celebrity, leading to the cancellation of his promotional activities. The case garnered immense public attention and prompted television, film, and music industry associations to urge celebrities to prioritize their profession and set positive examples to foster a healthier entertainment industry.
