The versatile actress Lim Ji Yeon is poised for a dynamic comeback with a new drama, where she is expected to bring to life a character starkly distinct from her previous roles.
Genie TV's highly anticipated original series, 'Lies Hidden in My Garden,' directed by Jung Ji Hyun and written by Gianni, is set to premiere on June 19. This suspenseful thriller revolves around two women whose lives take an unexpected turn due to a mysterious smell emanating from their backyard. Adapted from the popular novel of the same name, the series boasts a star-studded cast, including Kim Tae Hee, Lim Ji Yeon, Kim Sung Oh, and Choi Jae Rim.
Lim Ji Yeon, known for her previous role as a bully in 'The Glory,' will portray the character of Chu Sang Eun, a woman suffering from domestic abuse and yearning to escape from a cruel reality. Speaking through the production team, Lim Ji Yeon expressed her deep admiration for the original novel and screenplay. She revealed, "I fell in love with the original novel and screenplay after reading them. I think I would have appeared on the drama even if I didn't get the role of Chu Sang Eun. The connection between the two women in the story struck a chord with me, and I was eager to embody their lives as an actress. Curiosity about how the narrative would unfold further piqued my interest while I was reading the screenplay."
In 'Lies Hidden in My Garden,' Chu Sang Eun presents a stark contrast to Lim Ji Yeon's previous character, Park Yeon Jin, a school violence perpetrator in 'The Glory.' Lim Ji Yeon considered the role of Chu Sang Eun a desirable character to portray. Rather than perceiving it as a challenge to immerse herself in the role, she embraced it as an opportunity to explore a new facet of her acting abilities. Although the release of her previous work coincided with the choice to join this project, she embraced the chance to showcase a fresh perspective to the viewers, rather than attempting to distance herself from her past character.
Regarding her character, Chu Sang Eun, Lim Ji Yeon shared, "Rather than feeling sympathy, she's a character I feel like I saw somewhere. I thought 'She's going to be a hard character to portray.' I portrayed her while thinking she's the raw version of Lim Ji Yeon. I kept thinking about what it would be like to be this woman who has no color or emotion; she's the culmination of emotionlessness and emptiness. I actually filmed without wearing any makeup. The Chu Sang Eun in the original novel and the screenplay are slightly different. So those who read the original novel who watch the drama will probably see the Chu Sang Eun who is more like Lim Ji Yeon. I think the Chu Sang Eun I have inside of me came out even when I didn't try."
Lim Ji Yeon also expressed her delight in working with Kim Tae Hee for the first time. Lim Ji Yeon shared she had long wished to share the screen with her, and upon hearing the news, she felt thrilled. The actress also added that the chemistry between the two actresses was exceptional, allowing Lim Ji Yeon to effectively portray Chu Sang Eun's character.
Lastly, Lim Ji Yeon emphasized that 'Lies Hidden in My Garden' offers audiences a suspenseful and thrilling narrative centered around two women leading drastically different lives. She believes the unpredictable chemistry between the characters and the intricately woven storyline, filled with unexpected twists and turns, will captivate viewers.
Meanwhile, 'Lies Hidden in My Garden' will premiere on June 19.
She's a really talented actress, I'm glad she's getting so many interesting roles.
