Battle of the Rom-Com: King the Land vs. See You in My 19th Life, Which Do You Prefer?

AKP STAFF

Each passing weekend marks yet another engaging face-off between romantic comedies in the K-drama landscape. A notable entrant is 'King the Land,' which has been generating significant attention, thanks mainly to its marquee leads, Im YoonA and Lee Junho. The pre-premiere buzz surrounding this drama owes much to the established rapport between YoonA and Junho, who have previously partnered in several projects. Their most recent collaboration, the captivating 'Senorita' performance at the 2022 Gayo Dae Jaejun, has set high expectations for their on-screen chemistry in 'King the Land.'

Then we have 'See You in My 19th Life,' featuring the talented Ahn Bo Hyun and Shin Hye Sun in lead roles. This drama has piqued public interest due to its unique premise of adapting the popular webtoon by Lee Hey into a live-action series. Given the webtoon's extensive fan base, the anticipation is palpable. Moreover, the intriguing prospect of witnessing the on-screen dynamics between Bo Hyun and Hye Sun has further amplified the audience's curiosity.

What's even more interesting is that in both dramas, the male leads work in the hotel and hospitality industry. In "King the Land," Lee Junho plays Goo Won, the child of the CEO of the wealthy King Group, who is doing all he can as the hotel's general manager. Whereas Ahn Bo Hyun in "See You in My 19th Life" also comes from a wealthy family, but his ultimate goal is to restore back his deceased mother's hotel back to its glory. Both male lead characters are portrayed as emotionally guarded, and cold towards those they do not like, with a dependent assistant as their best friend.

Of course, we can't miss out on the female leads. YoonA plays Cheon Sarang, the happy-go-lucky hotelier who climbs up the social ranks from newbie hire to front desk, achieving the dream she always wanted to have. Meanwhile, Shin Hye Sun also plays the extremely multi-talented Ban Ji Eum, despite living a new life 19 times, nothing has stopped her from seeing the world in a pessimistic way despite experiencing pain, loss, and even war.

While "King the Land" seems more cliched and fast-paced, "See You In My 19th Life" feels as though there's more depth to the story, a slow buildup to something crucial to come. However, both dramas are great to watch as they have their own twist and spin on the plotline, but when it comes down to which one do you prefer?
