2022 was the year of rookie girl groups in K-pop, but soloists are also not left behind. Fans of K-pop were eager to see what soloists would bring to the table, and they were not disappointed. INVU - Taeyeon
Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon is one of the most successful and popular K-Pop female soloists. In early 2022 she returned with her third studio album, “INVU.” The lead single of the album, titled “INVU,” turned out to be one of the most popular solo releases of the year. The track topped all charts and went on to become the first song of the year to achieve Perfect All-Kill. Taeyeon's strong and magnificent high notes, along with the beautiful lyrics of this house and pop dance song, earned her the first Perfect All Kill of her career.
POP! - Nayeon
The lead vocalist and center of TWICE, Nayeon, is the first member of the group to make a solo debut. She made her debut as a soloist on June 24, 2022, with her first mini album, “IM NAYEON.” The title track, “POP!” became one of the most viral K-pop releases of 2022. The song is very catchy, and the concept of the music video screams TWICE and Nayeon. On YouTube, the music video has received more than 167 million views to date. It was one of the most successful solo debuts. Many fans and K-pop idols participated in the dance challenge of “POP!”
BTBT - B.I
B.I, who made his solo debut in 2021, released his second Extended Play album, “Love or Loved Part.1,” in 2022. One of the B-side tracks of the album, “BTBT,” went on to become viral among netizens and ended up being one of the top viral solo songs of the year. The song is even popular among non-K-Pop fans. He featured Soulja Boy and DeVita in the song. This is his most streamed solo track on Spotify to date. The performance film video of “BTBT” has suppressed more than 46 million views on YouTube.
THAT THAT - PSY
K-pop legend PSY has returned to the music industry after five years of hiatus. He released his full-length album “PSY 9TH” in April. BTS’s rapper Suga was a featured artist on the album's lead single, "THAT THAT." This collaboration of two popular K-pop figures went viral soon after it was released and became one of the most popular K-pop songs released by a soloist in 2022. So far, the music video for “THAT THAT” on YouTube is nearing 400 million views.
NEW THINGS - ZICO
In South Korea, "NEW THINGS" is arguably one of the most popular and viral solo singles of 2022. The song was released by ZICO as a mission song for “Street Man Fighter.” He collaborated with Homies on the song. The "New Thing" dance challenge gained popularity, drawing participation from many idols and even people who weren't fans. On YouTube music, the song has received over 35 million streams. “NEW THINGS” grew in popularity, reached the top spot on all of the charts, and eventually achieved Real Time All-Kill.
ZOOM - Jessi
Jessica Ho, popularly known as Jessi, is a K-pop solo artist from the second generation. She made a comeback on April 13, 2022, with the digital single “ZOOM.” The song’s catchy lyrics and beats made it go viral on platforms like TikTok. In addition to TikTok, people started posting videos using the song on Instagram and other social networking sites. The song quickly gained popularity, becoming Jessi's most streamed song on Spotify. Additionally, the music video has received more than 155 million views on YouTube.
