Of course, with different demographics comes different preferences; as many dramas have been released, there are always those that are just more popular abroad than within the homeland, so here are seven dramas that were major hits internationally but unfortunately flopped in South Korea!
1. "True Beauty": While the webtoon was a megahit in South Korea when it became adapted as a drama, unfortunately, it didn't get as much hype domestically. However, that isn't to say that fans abroad didn't find this series to be one of the funniest ones out there!
2. "Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo": With such a star-studded cast, one would think that this drama would have done well among domestic fans. However, with a rating of 5.1%, it became one of the lowest-ranking dramas in South Korea. Despite flopping in its home country, this is one of the most-watched dramas among international fans!
3. "Nevertheless" ranking internationally as one of the most watched dramas on Netflix, it's shocking that with such big house names as Song Kang and Han So Hee that this drama didn't get any higher than a 1% rating nationwide.
4. "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo": Unfortunately, this childhood friends-to-lovers trope didn't snatch the heart of viewers among fans in South Korea. But with such a cute plot line, and a drama that actually focuses on the negative aspects of body image, this became a winner among fans abroad! Plus, who can get over the two leads? Their chemistry was perfect!
5. "Tempted": Maybe it's because of so much angst in the drama, "Tempted," also known as "The Great Seducer," was unlike any other drama, which made it that much more unique among global fans!
6. "Uncontrollably Fond": Maybe because it was such a melodramatic drama that many didn't find the chemistry between Kim Woo Bin and Suzy worth watching, but if you're in for a sad story, one that'll rack all your sad emotions this is definitely for you!
7. "The King: Eternal Monarch": After the immense popularity Kim Go Eun gained from her previous fantasy drama "Goblin" and based on how much fans were crazy about the fantasy trope, it's truly a shocker that this drama flopped domestically especially since famous star Lee Min Ho was also the lead! So why didn't it do so well domestically, but globally is still a well-loved drama today? That is the real question.
Of course, with different demographics, you're going to have different preferences, but it's interesting to see how some K-dramas though they had a pretty solid plotline, still didn't do so well domestically, don't you think?
I didn't expect Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo to be on this list. Also the article title was so harsh lol
