K-pop groups are not just a singing and dancing pop culture phenomenon but are also influential ambassadors and faces for some of the most successful and most prominent global brands. So it makes sense for large brands to partner up with these Idols and turn their new advertising campaign into K-pop earworms. Throughout my list, I will be looking back at some iconic K-pop songs that are also commercials.
* Disclaimer* This list is not to degrade the songs or hard work done by the Idols and production teams because they are advertisements.
Visual Dreams - Girls Generation for Intel
Global technology company Intel, partnered up with Girls Generation in January of 2011 to promote their new possessors to the Korean market with the song Visual Dreams.
The music video had the Intel logo embedded within the music video, with the girls dancing in white futuristic style clothing, with the robotic arm and neck movements all to give a technological feel. On top of that, the lyrics of the song featured many technological anecdotes and allusions, especially the word 'core' referring to the Intel I-core.
The song has over 11 million views on YouTube since its upload in 2011
Lollipop - 2EN1 and BIGBANG for The LG Lollipop phone
In 2010, Korean tech company LG was keen to market their new colorful Lollipop phone to the young, tech-obsessed Korean youth. So what better way to do that than combine one of the biggest boy groups, BIGBANG, and girl group, 2NE1.
The phone came in a variety of colors reflected in the bold outfits of the artists in the video. The overall song is catchy and doesn't let you forget the name of the phone, with the majority of the chorus consisting of the word' Lollipop.'
This song is featured on the YG entertainment official YouTube channel and has over 94 Million Views.
Cabi Song- Girls Generation and 2PM for The Caribbean Bay Water Park
When you're trying to attract visitors to your new water park, What better way to do it than with the sexy members of two of the biggest K-pop groups of all time? This is what happened when Members of Girls Generation and 2PM got together and pretended to be trainee lifeguards, to promote Everland Resorts, Caribbean Bay water park
The Pop Idols were pictured in hot swimsuits as they worked to become lifeguards, ending off in a fun party. All while using lines such as "Oh Cabi Cabi The hottest hottest." To Be Honest, I feel as though the good-looking members would have been enough to attract me to the Park, but the song is still a bop and is in my workout Mix.
The MV isn't on any official YouTube pages or western streaming services, however. Thankfully some Iconic fans have brought this song to our ears.
Chocolate Love - Girls Generation for LG
If you're begging to notice a Girls Generation pattern here, you would be right. Only a band of such caliber as Girls Generation could be in demand for so many major brands and companies, turning advertisements into unforgettable hits. Korean electronics company LG was another brand who wanted a slice of the Girls Generation chocolate Pie, in order to promote their new Chocolate Phone.
So, In 2010, we were subject to a very sexy yet elegant Girls Generation, dancing around with feathers and, of course, the LG phone.
However, Girls Generation weren't the only ones to have all the fun, and fellow SM group f(x) released their own version of the song with their signature tech vibe.
My Colour - HyunA for Toyota Collora
In 2013, when Japanese Automotive company Toyota was looking for a famous K-pop Idol, HyunA was an incredible choice. The then 4 Minute member was a major star who danced with and in front of the various new colors of the Toyota Corolla.
The catchy song worked for Toyota, and sales for the region increased. So while some got a new car, K-pop and HyunA fans received a new song.
Although these are, of course, not all of the K-pop songs that are advertisements, these would have to be my top five. What do you think? Share your thoughts or some of your favorite Songs/Commercials.
