She was elected to office in 2012 as the first ever female president, but became wrapped up in a series of controversial scandals dealing with confiding in her childhood friend Choi Soon Sil in national matters, bribery from businesses like Samsung, and more.
The impeachment was ruled with a unanimous vote of 8 in favor to 0 against. By law, the country must elect a new president within 60 days. The acting president, Hwang Kyo Ahn, an ally of Park, will remain in office in the interim.
