HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODE 12
"This would be perfect, but I have to use the restroom."
And what do you do if you break up with your boyfriend? Get with your friend's ex, of course. What are friends for?
Yoon Ha comes riding to her friend's rescue, and the landlady agrees to let Ji Yi continue living there when Yoon Ha threatens to get the law involved. Late that night, Ji Yi breaks up with Chang Soo via text. Joon Ki's mother regrets quitting as the mistress's maid, but at the same time is scared because she began to envy her. Yoon Ha meets with Ye Won and tells her that she's suspicious because of the files left by her brother, that he may have met with foul play.
The next day, Ji Yi lunches with Chang Soo's mom. She tells the mom that Chang Soo and her are through and she needs to quit messing around with her life or she'll start dating Chang Soo again. At Taejin, it begins to be very uncomfortable for the split couples to see each other, but the girls begin to be comfortable around their friend's exes. It culminates with the girls each inviting the other's ex-boyfriends out to dinner, Yoon Ha with Chang Soo and Ji Yi with Joon Ki. During a dinner at the mistress' house, Won Sik colllapses and ends up in the hospital. After their dates, the mismatched couples meet while walking home. Chang Soo tries to talk to Ji Yi for a moment alone, but Joon Ki grabs his arm and stops him...
Talking to your fan may be the first sign you're lonely.
What did I tell you? He's old. He's a guy. And now he's collapsed. The patriarch has been brought low by the most ancient of tropes, and overused, from what I've seen. No elderly person seems to survive a drama that I've watched (okay, one guy, but the saeguk sequence ended before he could kick off), and it makes me fear for Joon Ki's father, who is not in the best of health either. I thought he might be the first, but somehow Won Sik is the more "correct" choice. He's a thoroughly terrible fellow, ruling the roost with an iron fist. And a lot of times that kind of person is the one that kicks off, or has a Scrooge-like change of heart following a near-death experience.
I'm not real comfortable with the partner-swapping. The first rule of bromance in my world is that you don't go after your buddy's ex. That just creates all kinds of problems that you don't need, and especially that soon. The wounds are still raw on both sides. On the other hand, this is a drama, and the writers seem to delight in putting the characters through their paces, so I shouldn't be terrible shocked. It's one more monkey wrench they can throw into the works, one more plot thread that they can dangle in front of us, only to be tied up in the end.
"What did I tell you? Isn't that the funniest meme you've ever seen on Facebook?"
Ji Yi has changed, but I'm not sure it's for the better. While I love her normally adorable style and charm, and the way she humiliated Chang Soo's mom was just so deliciously her, it concerns me that she's getting closer to Joon Ki, and then blows off talking to Yoon Ha. Yoon Ha not only got her an awesome job but she also has been there as a shoulder to cry on and been the one to help her out and cheer her up. I don't think she should be dependent on Yoon Ha, but she's not acting too much like a friend right now.
So we've had our old friend jealousy visit and along with it come its drinking buddies' pettiness and situational ethics. What is the justification for swapping partners? Unless the writers are pairing the chaebols and those of more moderate income together? And as I said before, that brings all sorts of problems with it. At least wait until the body is cold before pouncing like a vulture. And the easy way these characters came together is a bit contrived. Ji Yi tries to justify it by asking Yoon Ha why she shouldn't get along with Joon Ki even if he hurt our heroine. Why? Maybe because friends should stick together?
"You are interrupting something, as a matter of fact. I had just sat down for drinks with the invisible man..."
I think I see where this is going, but every once in awhile the writers surprise me (like today). I'm curious to see what happens next!
